"I'm going to get some rest," Stella said as she stood up and walked back to her room.
Jordan watched her back as she left, thinking, 'How much does she have to endure to become this strong? It really hurts to see her like this.'
The next day, before Jordan had even left, Lionel showed up already. He was making a total scene at the front gate, refusing to leave unless he saw Stella.
Jordan glanced at Stella. She didn't even react, clearly not planning to see him. So Jordan said, "If he keeps this up, just call the cops."
Not long after, the servant came back. "Mr. Erwin, Lionel said he can stop making a scene, but if Mrs. Erwin doesn't go out to see him, he'll just keep waiting outside," she reported.
"If he likes waiting, then let him be," Stella said, unconcerned.
The doctor Jordan found was even more skilled than Martin, and thanks to him, Stella could now manage two meals a day.
For breakfast, Stella could only handle an egg and a bowl of polenta, but when she looked in the mirror, she no longer saw a walking skeleton. She gained some weight, and she felt a whole lot better.
Jordan was about to head out for work, but before leaving, he shot Stella a worried glance, clearly still uneasy about leaving her alone.
"Don't worry, and just go. He can't do anything to me," Stella said, giving him a reassuring smile.
"Alright, but if anything comes up, call me right away," Jordan replied.
Stella gave a slight nod.
The weather had been perfect all morning, sunshine blazing in the sky. But by noon, the clouds rolled in and it started pouring rain.
The servant kept coming over to let Stella know that Lionel was still out there, waiting in the rain.
Stella acted as if she hadn't heard a thing and just headed back to her room.
The rain kept pouring down, and from her window, Stella could see Lionel standing there in the downpour. He still wasn't leaving. Stella had no intention of going out to him.
The rain didn't let up for over an hour, but Lionel just kept standing there the whole time.
Not bearing to see him like that, one of the security guards couldn't help but say, "Dr. Quinn, you should just leave. Mrs. Erwin isn't going to see you."
"No," Lionel replied stubbornly, "as long as I wait, she'll come out eventually."
'After everything I've put her through, getting soaked in the rain is nothing,' he thought to himself.
The sun was blazing again, big and warm, beating down on everyone.
Honestly, one wouldn't believe it. Lionel had been standing there so long that his clothes had completely dried. Jordan was almost home from work, and still, Stella didn't show the slightest intention of coming out to see Lionel.
Lionel had already steeled himself to stand out there all night if he had to. But just as he was bracing for a long wait, he suddenly saw Stella finally step out of the house.
Lionel was practically bursting with excitement. "Stella, I knew you'd come out to see me. I just knew it."
The security guard glanced over, and sure enough, there was Stella, stepping outside.
The guard couldn't help but worry a little. 'Is Mrs. Erwin really about to go soft on this guy?' he wondered.
To outsiders, Jordan always seemed ice-cold, almost scary, but he was always good to his men.
On the surface, Jordan looked aloof, but in private, he went above and beyond—even for a security guard.
Jordan had always been alone, and over time, the guards ended up treating him like family.
"Hi, Stella," Lionel called out, his voice brimming with excitement as he waved at her.
But the moment he saw her standing there, face completely blank, all that joy crashed down in an instant like he'd just fallen from the clouds straight to the ground.
And when he realized Stella wasn't actually coming out, just standing there inside the gate, it finally hit him that Stella was really, truly mad at him this time.
