Watching Stella dash off like a bunny, Jordan couldn't help but smile.
He poured himself a glass of water, took a sip, and started recalling how they had first met.
It really was a stroke of luck.
They met online by chance. At first, he had thought she was a man, and they got along so well that he treated her just like one of his bros.
During their last online chat, she asked him: [Do you think I'm a guy? I'm not. I'm a girl.]
Jordan: [I don't believe. You're so good at computers. How could you be a girl?]
Stella: [Who says being good at computers means you have to be a man? I was born with this talent, and I am a girl.]
Jordan couldn't help but ask: [How old are you?]
Stella: [It's rude to ask a lady her age, you know. But since you're so curious, I'll tell you. Just don't be too surprised.]
Jordan: [Alright. Let's hear it.]
Stella: [I turned eighteen this year. When we first chatted, I was only fifteen. I had just finished high school and got my admission letter from Quentiham University.]
Jordan was amused. He replied: [With your skills, getting into Quentiham University is no surprise. But... you're only eighteen? I don't believe it.]
After that, there was no more response from Stella. Jordan sent her messages several times and even asked her about software maintenance, but she never replied to him.
Jordan found it strange. He wondered, 'Is she ignoring me because I didn't believe her? Did I make her mad?'
When their income came in, Jordan split her share with her, and he noticed she had used it, but still, she never replied.
Just like that, three years went by. During that time, he heard about what had happened to the heiress of the Hayes family, but he never made the connection.
Jordan had thought that person would never talk to him again.
He even laughed at himself, thinking, 'How did I end up falling for someone who isn't real for me? Guess I've been alone for so long that I got attached to someone I only knew online.'
When he was finally ready to move on and embrace a new life, out of the blue, he received a message: [This is my new number. I'll reach out when I have time.]
His heart, which had been dormant for so long, suddenly came alive.
Jordan was so happy that he almost wanted to run straight to her, but he was afraid of scaring her off, so he just asked: [Can we meet up?]
She replied: [It's not a good time right now.]
Jordan was really disappointed. After all this time, they still hadn't met face to face. Jordan wondered if she was really a woman, if she was as young as she said, and if she was playing him for a fool.
Luckily, after that, they did keep in touch, though it was only on and off.
Stella never told him what was going on with her, but Jordan could sense that something must have happened. He wondered what that was.
What Jordan had never expected was that one day Stella would call him for help.
When he picked up the phone, his heart was pounding so hard. He was overjoyed, but when he answered, he pretended nothing was out of the ordinary.
"Hello?" Jordan said.
"Jordan," a woman's anxious voice sounded.
Jordan's brow furrowed instantly. He could tell something was seriously wrong. He felt his anxiety rising. He asked, "Where are you?"
Stella replied, "Crescent Villa. Help me."
Then, the line went dead.
Jordan knew exactly what kind of place Crescent Villa was. It was a luxury resort where the rich went to do whatever they wanted, no matter how shady. Jordan wondered why on earth Stella would be there.
At that moment, he was in the middle of a crucial negotiation about Apple software copyrights with a foreign client. After getting Stella's call, he couldn't sit still.
Finally, he told his assistant to take over the negotiation, and he rushed back home as fast as he could.
