Fiona quickly shielded her purse. "What are you doing?"
Silas said, "I can't stay here any longer. Fiona, give me some money so I can get away."
Fiona only had this one brother. She had told Silas many times to stop gambling. For a while, he listened and stopped. But now, he was back in his old ways, which made Fiona furious.
She could only pull out 6 thousand dollars. She said, "This is all I have. I don't even have enough for Max's surgery. Just go hide. You hear me?"
"Yeah, I got it. Don't worry. I'll help you get the money for Max's surgery back. I promise," Silas said.
Silas took the cash and hurried off. He counted the bills as he walked to make sure it was enough.
Fiona wondered what she should do if Andrew asked about the 30 thousand dollars she didn't have.
Just then, she turned around and saw Anna standing there. Her heart skipped a beat. She quickly composed herself and walked over to Anna.
"Anna, what are you doing out here?" she asked.
"You hadn't come back yet, so I came out to check on you. Mom, why is Uncle Silas here?" Anna asked, glancing in the direction from which Silas had just left.
Fiona replied with a smile, "He came over because he's worried about Max. Back when we were in prison, no one was there to look after Max. It's your uncle who stepped in to help.
"He told me he has been keeping an eye on the guy who hit Max, and he promised he'll keep following up on what happens next, so we don't have to worry about it."
Anna just nodded, not sure if she believed her or not. She asked, "By the way, Mom, have you paid Max's hospital bill?"
"Not yet. I was about to take care of it. You can go check on Max, and I'll go handle the payment," Fiona replied.
"I'll go with you," Anna said.
"No need," Fiona replied.
As Anna was about to leave, she shot Fiona another glance, unable to shake the feeling that something was off about Fiona, even if she couldn't say exactly what.
Still, Anna went back to check on Max.
Fiona was at her wits' end. She didn't want to sell Anna's jewelry, but when she asked Stella for money, Stella refused. Fiona wondered, 'Am I really going to just stand by and watch Max die in the hospital?'
She called one of the servants at home and told her to sell Anna's jewelry.
It took Fiona a long time to pull together 30 thousand dollars, but she was surprised to know that someone had helped with 15 thousand dollars. She hurried back to the hospital room and asked, "Who paid the 15 thousand dollars?"
Emily immediately said, "It was probably Dr. Quinn. Earlier he—"
Before she could finish, Anna quickly cut in, "It wasn't Dr. Quinn, Mom. It was Emily. She didn't want anyone to know. I was going to tell you earlier, but I forgot it in a rush."
Fiona didn't suspect and quickly grabbed Emily's hand.
Fiona said, "Emily, we have no idea how to thank you. You already gave us 30 thousand dollars before, and now another 15 thousand dollars. You must be almost out of money yourself. I know how much you care about Max, but his situation..."
Of course, Emily understood what Fiona meant. The Hayes family was always nice to her, but they had never once brought up the idea of her marrying Max.
Emily knew her family was way too average for the Hayes family to ever consider her good enough.
The Hayes family had never thought about letting her marry into the family. All they ever promised was to pay her back when they could, but if they didn't have money, they wouldn't pay anyway.
