"My pleasure. I totally understand, Mrs. Hayes. I just don't want anything to happen to Max. Whatever I can do to help, I will," Emily said.
"You're such a good girl," Fiona replied.
Anna had never once tried to play matchmaker or push her and Max together, either.
Emily understood it better than anyone, but she loved Max so much that she wanted to stay by his side, watching over him, even if it meant sacrificing more for him.
At Hayes Group, Stella had been poring over the company's financial reports for the past few days, only to find that the company was like a tree that had been rotting from the inside out for years.
It turned out that Hayes Group hadn't been doing well all these years. It had only survived because of the money she had been pouring into it, and it had been operating at a loss the whole time.
Stella couldn't help but laugh at how ridiculous it all was.
She had thought Max had some talent, but it turned out he was just as useless as the rest of the Hayes family.
She didn't have the human resources department hire anyone new lately. Instead, she called a meeting.
She had already promoted Jasper to the position of vice president.
At the meeting, Stella tossed the stack of documents onto the table in front of everyone.
She said, "Take a look at this. The company is in such a mess. No wonder we ended up bringing in someone like Mr. Bass to help us.
"This project is an abyss. If we don't put a stop to it, even tens of billions wouldn't be enough to save us. My opinion is that we have to go through a transformation."
Everyone was reading the documents with their faces turning extremely grim.
They weren't key players in the company, so they had never had access to this kind of information before. Now that they read them for themselves, they were all left speechless.
Stella said, "We've got money on hand right now. We have Mr. Jordan Erwin's investment and my own money. I've got ways to pull in more investors, too. But we have to launch a brand-new project."
Jasper looked serious. "Ms. Hayes, what do you think we should do? We don't have the talent for something like AI technology, and it would cost a lot to hire technical personnel. Besides, all the good ones are already snatched up by the big companies."
"We can get into the supermarket business," Stella said.
Everyone looked at Stella like she was crazy. After all, supermarkets were everywhere. Once one went under, another popped up. People didn't think the Hayes Group had strengths.
Stella explained, "I've been hitting up supermarkets a lot lately. I found most of the stuff on the shelves is loaded with chemicals and weird additives. It's a real health risk for people.
"And for the prices, we can control costs, but why are things cheap outside but expensive in the supermarket?
"Plus, supermarkets aren't diverse enough. We should make a place where people can walk in and get everything they need for a full meal, all in one stop, no more running around to different stores. Maybe that's the way to go."
Everyone looked at each other. None of them ever really shopped at supermarkets themselves, so they honestly had no clue what Stella was talking about.
Stella could see their confusion. She said, "Alright. Here's what we'll do. I'll give you some time to go out and do some research. You need to find out what regular folks want from a supermarket, and then we'll make improvements based on that.
"I believe we can build a better supermarket if we do this."
With that, Stella left the room.
Her assistant hurried over, keeping pace with Stella. He said, "Ms. Hayes, there's someone outside named Silas Clark. He said he is your uncle and wants to see you."
Stella suddenly stopped in her tracks. If Silas hadn't shown up himself, she would have forgotten that this uncle of hers even existed in her family.
