"You're lying. My mom would never take my jewelry. She bought all of it for me, and she even said she'd buy me more in the future," Anna snapped, her voice sharp with anger.
She then grabbed the whip again and swung it at the maid.
The maid, growing desperate, pleaded, "I'm telling the truth. Mrs. Hayes called me back then and said she needed money urgently. She told me not to ask questions and just do it. If you don't believe me, check my phone—there is a call from her."
"I don't believe you. You must have stolen them and sold them behind my back. I'm calling the police," Anna shouted, her face flushed with fury.
The maid shot back, "Fine, call the police. I'll tell them how you don't even treat me like a human being and beat me like this. I'll make sure you pay for it."
Just then, Andrew burst in from outside. He demanded, "Fiona. Where's Fiona? Fiona, get out, now."
Anna, not knowing what was going on, stepped out of her room. "Dad, what's going on?" she asked, her voice filled with concern.
"Anna, weren't you supposed to go to your friend's party? Why are you still here?" Andrew asked, his tone sharp.
"I was looking for my jewelry. It's gone," Anna replied.
"Don't bother looking. Your mom sold it all," Andrew said.
Anna was stunned. She snapped, "No way. Why would my mom just sell my jewelry out of nowhere?"
Andrew didn't explain, just kept looking for Fiona.
Even Eleanor was alarmed by all the noise. Mary helped her out of her room, and Eleanor asked, "What's going on? You come back and start making such a racket—I can't even get any rest."
Andrew asked, "Mom, have you seen Fiona?"
Eleanor rarely saw Andrew in such a rush. She knew something big must be up. She replied, "I haven't seen her. Looks like she hasn't come back yet."
Andrew grabbed his phone, ready to make a call, when suddenly, someone walked in—it was Fiona.
As soon as she stepped inside, Fiona could feel the tension in the air. She had rushed back from Stella's place, hoping to calm things down before they blew up, but the weird vibe in the room told her she was already too late.
"So you actually came back, Fiona," Andrew yelled at her.
Fiona was still thinking about how to appease Andrew, but before she could say a word, he stormed over and slapped her hard across the face.
Andrew shouted, "I really didn't expect you to secretly give your family so much money behind my back. No wonder our money keeps disappearing—it's all your doing, you woman."
The slap was so vicious that blood trickled from the corner of Fiona's mouth. Knowing she was in the wrong, Fiona started to explain, "Andrew, please, listen to me. It's not what you think."
Before she could finish, Andrew slapped her again, even harder this time.
Andrew snapped, "Have I ever treated your family badly? Every holiday, I bring over so many gifts. I paid for your brother's wedding, his car, his house, and even the dowry.
"Haven't I done enough for your family already? So why would you still go behind my back and do something like this?"
At this point, even Anna finally saw the truth. She demanded, "Mom, did you really do it?"
Fiona's cheek was already swollen. She wanted to explain, but before she could say anything, Anna demanded, "So you sold my jewelry—was it all for your own family?"
