Fiona said, "No, that's not it. I only did it to pay for Max's treatment. He was in such terrible condition. I couldn't just watch him die without doing something."
Andrew slapped Fiona again. He roared, "I told you at the hospital to come up with 30 thousand, and you couldn't. So you did give all the money to Silas."
Anna asked, "Dad, how much did Mom give her family?"
"How much? Let her tell you herself," Andrew replied, looking at Fiona as if he could eat her alive.
Fiona couldn't meet Anna's eyes. She lowered her head and mumbled, "I never really kept track. Whenever they asked, I just handed it over."
Andrew had always treated Fiona well. Even though Eleanor never really liked her and had warned Andrew to be careful, he always chose to trust Fiona over Eleanor. And now, look at the mess Fiona had landed him in.
Andrew said, "You won't say it? Then I'll spell it out for you. It's a full 15 million. That's enough to open a whole company."
Anna nearly fell over in shock at that number. She exclaimed, "What? Mom, does the Clark family really need that much money?"
Andrew chimed in, "Of course they do. Silas is always gambling. At first, it was just a few bucks, but then he got greedier and started losing hundreds of thousands, even millions.
"All that money came from our family. If your mom didn't give them the money, the Clark family would've finished a long time ago."
Anna shouted, "Mom, how could you be so blind? Silas's gambling problem is out of control. Shouldn't you be helping him quit instead of just handing him money?"
Fiona tried to defend herself. She said, "Of course, I tried to help him. But he just can't control himself, and I can't watch him every second.
"If I don't pay for him, those men will cut off his fingers—I can't just stand by and watch. Oh, and by the way, I just came back from Stella's place.
"She turned Silas over to the debt collectors, and they had his fingers chopped off. He still owes them a few million, and I have to do something."
Andrew's rage boiled over—he landed a vicious slap that sent Fiona sprawling to the floor.
He snapped, "Serves him right. He treats me like his personal ATM, just taking money whenever he wants—who the hell does he think he is? Losing a few fingers is the least he deserves.
"Look at us now—we can't even scrape together enough for Max's medical bills. And the Clark family? Still living a good life in that nice house.
"No wonder Bella is still hanging around—she's got a generous sister like you to keep her comfortable."
Fiona didn't think she'd done anything wrong. She shot back, "Silas is my only brother—of course I should look after him."
"Even your own parents don't care about him. Why do you have to?" Andrew shot back, his voice full of contempt.
Fiona shouted, "They just can't afford it. So what if I spent some of your money? I gave birth to our kids—I'm just using my own children's money. I haven't done anything wrong."
"Where's the whip? Somebody, bring me the whip—now!" Andrew roared, his face twisted with rage.
Fiona was scared, and she pointed at Andrew and stammered, "You dare hit me again? Do you think I won't go to the police and report you for domestic violence?"
Andrew roared, "Go ahead, call the cops. I was planning to sue your whole family anyway and get every cent back. If you don't return the money, every house, every car, anything I paid for—I'll take it all back. Otherwise, I'll sue you all."
Fiona screamed as the whip lashed across her back, the pain so sharp it tore the cry from her throat.
