The mask was completely gone. The gentle, sweet girl was nowhere to be seen. In her place was something truly terrifying.
"Relax, Grandma," Anna cooed, her voice dripping with poison. "This place is completely deserted. I planned this just as carefully as I planned Stella's kidnapping. No one suspected me then, and no one will suspect me now.
"The only real tragedy here is poor Stella. Can you imagine how heartbroken she's going to be when she knows your death?"
Eleanor couldn't talk anymore, tears streaming down her face.
"Oh, Grandma, why are you crying?" Anna mocked, her voice disgustingly sweet. "Think about it. Life is so hard for you, isn't it? Your body's falling apart more every day.
"If I were you, I would have left this world long ago. I'm just helping you along. Think of it as a mercy killing."
Eleanor's hand suddenly started clawing wildly, like she was trying to drag Anna straight to hell with her.
Anna watched, a sick smile playing on her lips. "Still fighting, Grandma? You're literally dying, and you're still trying to take me with you? It's pathetic. I beat you. Didn't I?
"I wasn't even going to kill you, you know. But what you said to me today... And thinking about how you've always treated me like crap while spoiling Stella... It just boiled over. So I brought you here.
"Since you're gonna die anyway, I might as well tell you the whole story. That's right. I had Emily find the kidnapper. Why? Because Stella wouldn't let me take her spot at Quentiham University.
"I bet you're thinking, 'Over a university? Was it really worth all that?' And I'm telling you, yes, it was. It was worth everything.
"If Stella hadn't leeched all the nutrients from me in the womb, would I have been the one who was sick all the time?
"You know what that's like, Grandma. You've been sick. While other kids were playing outside, I was stuck at home watching from the window.
"Especially watching Stella. Every single sports day, there she was, running and jumping and dancing. And me? I could only watch.
"Do you have any idea what that feels like, Grandma? She stole my health. She stole my childhood. She owed me. It was only fair she pay it back."
Eleanor tried to speak, but she couldn't. She was getting weaker by the second.
Anna didn't even notice, lost in her own twisted narrative. "I was so upset. Stella wouldn't let me take her place at Quentiham. How could she say no? But I had to go to a good school.
"I couldn't go to some two-bit junior college while she went to the best. If I graduated from there, everyone would compare me to Stella. They would say how Stella was better than me at everything.
"Why am I not as good as her? Because life has been unfair to me from the very beginning. So I had her kidnapped. If she had said yes, I wouldn't have had to go that far. Stella screwed herself over. That's not on me."
Eleanor's hand kept trembling, growing weaker with each passing moment. Anna saw it and sneered down at her. "Grandma, you know what? If Stella had just stayed missing, none of this would've happened.
"But she just kept coming back, like a cockroach. She climbed right over me and took everything. The Hayes family, the money... All of it was supposed to be mine. Not even Max's. Mine.
She sneered, "Stella wanted a war, and she got one. And you, Grandma... You were the first victim. So, goodbye."
Anna hoisted the wheelchair up and let go, dropping it right onto Eleanor. It crashed down with a final thud. Eleanor's eyes closed, and this time, they did not open again.
