Stella was about to leave when the security guards moved in to kick them out. Monroe pulled Anna into his arms. "Who dares to touch her?"
The security guards had received Stella's orders and were prepared to lay hands not only on Anna but on Monroe too. Anna quickly tugged at Monroe's arm. "Forget it. Let's go."
Monroe led Anna away from the Hayes Group. Worried about her, he checked her over to see if she was hurt. But Anna wasn't concerned about herself; she was checking Monroe instead.
"Monroe, I'm sorry. It's all my fault; they didn't even show you any respect," she said.
"Stella has gone too far. Your grandmother's death definitely has something to do with her. Now that Mrs. Hayes is gone, she thinks she can do whatever she wants. I'll make sure she pays for this," Monroe said.
"Don't. Your family never liked me anyway. If they find out you're doing this for me, they'll blame you. Maybe they will revoke your position because of me. I don't want you to sacrifice so much for me," Anna said.
"Don't say that," Monroe said. He gently cupped Anna's face. "From the day you agreed to be with me, I swore I'd always put you first, no matter what. I'll never let them hurt you."
Anna felt her heart melt. Even though she thought Monroe was such an idiot sometimes, she loved every second of this feeling.
She had never felt anything like this when she was with Lionel. Right now, being treasured like this was the best feeling ever; nothing could compare.
Monroe needed to head back to the office, but he wanted to make sure Anna got home safely first. Yet when he looked up, he saw Lionel standing there. He had no idea when Lionel had shown up.
Monroe could never bring himself to like Lionel. Lionel glanced at Anna. "Can we talk?"
Anna held tightly onto Monroe's hand. "Go ahead and say whatever you want. Monroe's not an outsider."
"Are you sure?" Lionel didn't look too pleased.
Anna insisted, "Yes. Very sure."
Lionel didn't seem to care if Monroe was there or not. He just asked, "What happened to Mrs. Hayes?"
Monroe's face darkened. "You don't go ask Stella, but you come to Anna instead? Weren't you her fiancé before? Who do you think you are?"
Lionel didn't miss the look that flashed across Anna's face. He glanced at Monroe, and then turned back to Anna. "What are you going to do about your parents and Max?"
"You can ask me, not her. And besides, you two are no longer engaged. Her business has nothing to do with you. I'm her boyfriend, so you'd better stay out of it," Monroe said.
Lionel said nothing, just staring at Anna. Anna felt uneasy under his gaze. She tugged on Monroe's arm. "Monroe, wait for me over there. I need to talk to him alone for a minute."
"He might hurt you," Monroe said, clearly worried.
Anna shook her head. "He won't. Plus, you'll be right nearby. Just keep watching from over there. If he does anything, you can come right over." Monroe nodded. He shot Lionel a warning look before walking off.
Lionel let out a faint smile. "So in the end, you still couldn't resist making him leave? What did you say to him? Is he just another guy you're stringing along?"
"Lionel, I don't get what you're saying. I know breaking up was my fault, but you know my family's situation; you couldn't help much. My parents love me a lot; I can't leave them," Anna said.
