"So your idea of helping them is just running to Monroe? What has he done for you? Your parents and Max have already been transferred to another hospital. You didn't know that?" Lionel pressed.
Anna replied, "I know, but I just started dating Monroe. I can't bring myself to ask him for that kind of help so soon. Lionel, I don't blame you. I know you're in a tough spot, and I can't help you either.
"I just hope you won't hold it against me. Breaking off the engagement was something neither of us could help. But no matter what, I won't abandon my parents or Max."
To Lionel, it was like he didn't even know Anna anymore; she felt like a total stranger, maybe even a little scary. He honestly had no clue why he was thinking this way.
Anna deliberately put on a sad face. "You came to check on Stella, right? She and Eleanor were very close, so now that Eleanor is gone, Stella is hurting the most. But Lionel, Stella doesn't need you anymore; she's doing fine with Jordan now."
"How did Mrs. Hayes die?" Lionel pressed. He stared at her, his gaze sharp and unyielding.
Anna froze, staring back at him in disbelief. "Lionel, I don't get what you mean. Are you trying to say I had something to do with Eleanor's death?"
"I don't know, it's just this weird feeling I can't explain," Lionel said. Even Lionel himself didn't get why these thoughts kept popping up; he just couldn't shake them.
"How could you even think that? Even if Eleanor didn't like me, I'm still her own granddaughter! There's no way I'd ever do something like that," Anna exclaimed.
Even Lionel thought he was being ridiculous. He had no idea where these thoughts were coming from. Lionel gave Anna one last look, let out a heavy sigh, and said, "Take care of yourself."
With that, he turned and left. Anna stood watching him leave. 'Does Lionel believe me? But why did he ever doubt me? How could he think I'd do that?' she thought.
Monroe, still worried, quickly walked back over and pulled Anna into his arms. "What's wrong?" he asked.
He felt her hand; it was ice-cold. Monroe grew even more anxious and started rubbing her hands between his palms, trying to warm herself up.
"Anna, don't scare me. Are you okay?" he said, his voice full of concern.
Anna looked up at Monroe, and tears started streaming down her face. At the sight, Monroe's heart broke, and he gently wiped away her tears, his touch soft and careful.
"Don't cry. You still have me, don't you?" he murmured, trying to comfort her.
Anna threw herself into Monroe's arms. "Monroe, you know what? You're all I have now. There's no one else but you."
Monroe couldn't completely understand all the pain she was feeling, but watching her shoulder everything by herself made his heart ache for her. He held her tightly. "Don't be afraid. I'm here."
Anna nodded, but soon, her gaze grew chilling and fierce. 'Looks like it's time to teach some people a lesson,' she thought.
Nearby, Stella had been watching everything happening closely. She didn't notice Anna's look, but judging by their actions, she had to admit Anna's performance was convincing.
Playing two guys like that took real skill, and she also tangled Andrew, Fiona, and Max in her emotional games. Admittedly, that was pretty impressive.
Meanwhile, Stella was still on her phone, checking through Eleanor's call history. It didn't take long before she got the results. When she saw that the last number dialed was Emily's, all the pieces fell into place.
