"Hold on, if there's someone you like, why did you marry me? Look," she suggested, "maybe we should just go down to the courthouse and file for divorce. Seriously, I'll explain that this whole marriage isn't real."
"It's not necessary," Jordan said, a shadow crossing his features as he looked away. "She doesn't feel the same way about me."
Stella huffed in disbelief. "How could anyone not? You're such a good guy. Unless..." she narrowed her eyes playfully, "you turn into Ice King Jordan around her? You can't win someone over like that. You have to be warm. Patient. Like you are right now."
"Hey, look," Jordan interjected, deftly changing the subject and pointing toward the skyline. "I think there's a drone show starting tonight."
Stella had heard about drone light shows but never seen one. She followed Jordan's gesture. Hundreds of tiny lights pulsed and wove against the velvet sky.
"Jordan, we need to get closer." Forgetting their previous conversation entirely, she headed straight for the thickening crowd near the show.
The press of bodies tightened ahead. Given Stella's fragile health, Jordan worried she might get jostled or even knocked down. His hand shot out, catching Stella's elbow before she could plunge in.
Before she could protest, strong hands gripped her waist and lifted her effortlessly onto his shoulders.
Startled, Stella gasped. "Jordan! What are you doing? Put me down."
"Best seats in the house," Jordan countered, anchoring her legs firmly. "Now get your phone and record it."
Fumbling for her phone, Stella aimed it skyward as the spectacle unfolded: a thousand points of light coalesced into a radiant rose that unfurled across the night, then dissolved into a pod of crystalline dolphins breaching a sea of stars. "Oh..." she whispered. "It's magic."
Though the sky blazed above, Jordan's eyes stayed fixed on Stella's upturned face, lit by wonder. Her joy, luminous and unguarded, was the brighter spectacle.
Jordan held her aloft for the entire thirty-minute performance, unwavering. As the last drone winked out, Stella's awareness snapped back to her position—high above the ground, Jordan's shoulders solid beneath her thighs.
Heat flooded her cheeks. "Put me down! You shouldn't have held me up for the whole thing. Your shoulders must be killing you."
Jordan lowered her gently. "Nothing," he dismissed, rolling his shoulders easily. "You're barely there. It's just half an hour. Honestly, an hour wouldn't even be a challenge." Confidence radiated from him.
"Seriously, where do you get all that strength?" Stella asked.
"Exercise," Jordan replied simply, but the look he gave Stella held a deeper, unspoken implication.
Oblivious to his subtext, Stella held out her phone screen, glowing. "Look! I got it all. Perfect, right?"
"You know," Jordan teased lightly, "technically, you could probably program a show like this yourself, couldn't you?"
Stella kept scrolling, a soft smile playing on her lips. "Absolutely, I could. But watching it? I completely switched off my techie brain. I'm just a regular girl, swept up in magic. And it felt wonderful. So happy. So romantic."
Jordan watched her, a quiet warmth spreading through him. The simplest things seemed to bring her genuine joy, lighting up her whole world.
Any earlier conversation was long forgotten. Stella spotted the carnival stalls lining the square. "Ooh, ring toss," she exclaimed, grabbing Jordan's hand and tugging him forward.
Before she could even reach for her purse, Jordan plopped an enormous pile of wooden rings—easily two hundred—onto the counter.
Stella gaped at the mountain of rings. "Jordan! Why did you get so many?"
Jordan just grinned, nudging a handful of rings towards her. "You wanted to play. So go ahead. Give it your best shot and enjoy yourself."
