Stella glared at Monroe, and he quickly pulled his hand away.
He looked embarrassed. "Sorry, I didn't mean to do that."
"You did it on purpose," Stella said.
"No, I didn't," he replied. He just wanted to listen in on their conversation and subconsciously leaned closer, never expecting Stella to suddenly sit down right next to him.
But he really had touched Stella's butt just now, and it was nothing like a normal person's, almost flat and bony, barely any flesh at all.
He'd heard a few things about Stella before, and for some reason, he didn't even know what got into him—he suddenly found himself wondering how she'd managed to get through these past three years.
Everyone was staring at them, so he had no choice but to keep apologizing.
Stella could tell he hadn't meant it, so she let it slide.
Around half past nine, Stella's phone rang. It was Jordan calling. "When are you coming back? Do you need me to pick you up?" he asked.
"I might be a while. No, I'll just take a cab back," Stella replied.
"If you need me, just give me a call," Jordan said.
"Will do," Stella said.
Monroe was right there and could hear every word between them, especially Jordan's gentle tone. It was almost unreal to him.
In Monroe's mind, Jordan had always been cold and ruthless. Like what he did to Silas, he'd actually heard about that from Anna. Monroe had asked Anna if she wanted him to help teach Jordan a lesson.
Anna just shook her head and said no. Silas never cared about Fiona, and after all the money Fiona gave the Clark family, he totally had it coming. But Monroe knew he could never be as hard as Jordan.
As for why Jordan had beaten Silas, Monroe had no clue. But whenever he heard Jordan and Stella talking, it made him feel uneasy inside and he didn't even know why.
When Stella went to the restroom, Monroe also went. When he came out, he saw someone grabbing Stella and saying, "Stella, how could you be so heartless, leaving your own uncle in that state?"
Stella pushed her away. "Mrs. Clark, get your facts straight. It wasn't me who did that to him."
"No, it wasn't you, but it was your husband," the woman said. "If Jordan can go after your uncle like that, he could do the same to you one day."
"Mrs. Clark, give me a break. Are you trying to brainwash me? Save those tricks you used on Fiona. They won't work on me at all," Stella shot back. "Don't pretend you don't know why Jordan did that to Silas."
"Of course I know. All Silas wanted was to borrow some money from you people. If you didn't want to lend it, fine, but why did you have to beat him up? We couldn't even go to the cops about it," the woman snapped.
"Go to the cops?" Stella couldn't help but laugh. "Mrs. Clark, are you serious? Your husband owes 3 million in gambling debts, and he lied to my husband, saying you wanted to invest.
"And then he asked for 15 million. Is that what you call 'just a little money'? The last time he came to me for a loan, you knew I wouldn't give him a dime, so he went after my husband instead.
"You really have no idea who my husband is, do you? Thinking you could pull a fast one on him? That's just ridiculous. You should be grateful it wasn't me who beat him up. If I had, he wouldn't have made it out alive."
Silas's wife froze. "How can you say that?"
"Why not? Have you forgotten what your husband did to me? I'm his niece, and he took money from my family and even tried to..." Stella's voice trembled as she spoke.
Stella couldn't bring herself to say it out loud, and Monroe froze on the spot.
"Stop making things up. He would never do something like that," the woman snapped.
