It was like someone had tossed a stone into a still lake, and ripples instantly spread out across the surface.
Even though Jordan knew Stella was drunk, he still couldn't help being drawn to her. He came over and sat down by her side. "You want me to stay?" he asked.
Stella clung tightly to his hand, pressing her face into his palm, and then, all of a sudden, she started to cry. "I miss Grandma."
Jordan felt a sharp pain in his chest. No matter how strong she was, there were days when she just couldn't hold it together.
He gently rubbed her back with his other hand. "I know. She didn't want to leave you, but she just couldn't stay by your side any longer."
"I know I shouldn't cry. If Grandma saw me like this, she'd be sad. But I can't help it. She was the only one who ever treated me well since I was a kid. And now, even she's gone. Jordan, I don't have Grandma anymore."
Her voice sounded so heartbreakingly sad. It was just like how Jordan had felt when he lost his own family. "If you need to cry, go ahead and cry. I'll stay right here with you," he said softly.
"Jordan, will you leave me too?" she asked.
Before Jordan could answer, Stella went on, "You will. We only got married because of an agreement. Sooner or later, you'll leave me too. In this world, it'll just be me, all alone."
"No, I won't!" Jordan said firmly. He didn't even know if she could hear him, but he still said, "If you don't want our marriage to be just an agreement, then it isn't. I never wanted our marriage to be just a deal.
"This so-called marriage agreement was just my way of keeping you by my side, hoping that you'd slowly fall in love with me."
Stella's tears kept streaming down her face. "Why is my life so hard? Why did I have to end up like this? No one loves me. No one ever cares about me."
"I feel the same way!" Jordan said. Maybe because they were both speaking from the heart, Jordan started to feel sad too. They just kept talking, pouring out their hearts, and before they knew it, Stella had fallen asleep.
Jordan watched her sleep, his hand never leaving her. He stayed by her side, and eventually drifted off to sleep beside her.
The next morning, when Stella woke up, she found herself cradled in a warm hand. She looked at the hand, and then at its owner, and saw Jordan watching her.
Stella was startled and sat up quickly. "I... I..." she stammered. She realized she was in her own room, and then glanced at Jordan again.
Jordan tried to move, but his hand had gone numb.
When Stella saw his face twist in pain, she rushed over and immediately started to massage his arm. "Are you okay?" she asked.
"Don't. Just let me sit for a minute and let it recover on its own," he said.
"I'm sorry. I... I didn't know," Stella said, looking flustered.
Jordan kept his eyes on her, and then let a small smile slip. "It's nothing, just need a minute to recover."
"I think I drank too much last night. I can't remember much after that," Stella said, frowning as she tried to recall.
"But you said you didn't drink much," Jordan teased.
"I didn't drink much. I remember I took a tiny sip. They all know how I am, so no one tried to push me. I just thought, since I was already there, I shouldn't make them keep looking after me, so I had a little.
"I didn't think I'd be this weak," she said, sounding frustrated.
Jordan gave her a reassuring smile. "It's okay. I'm fine now, really." He tried to move his arm, but as soon as he did, he winced in pain.
Stella hurried over to him.
Just then, the doctor walked in, and Stella quickly asked the doctor to check on him.
After checking him out, the doctor said, "It's nothing serious. He just stayed in one position for too long. I'll do a bit of acupuncture and he'll be fine."
