Once he finished with Jordan, the doctor gave Stella a few needles as well. They hadn't had breakfast yet. Luckily, the acupuncture didn't take long. While they were eating, Stella kept sneaking glances at Jordan.
Jordan couldn't help but smile. "If you've got something to say, just say it. No need to keep sneaking looks at me."
"Why didn't you push me away last night?" she blurted out.
"You were crying. I figured you needed someone to stay with you," he replied gently.
Stella froze. "I was crying?"
Jordan didn't want to talk about it. She felt a lot better after crying last night. There was no need to bring it up and make her sad all over again. "It's nothing. Let's eat," he said.
Seeing that he didn't want to talk about it anymore, Stella said, "If something like that happens again, you don't have to fuss over me. Really, I'll be fine."
Jordan's lips curled into a smile.
Stella grew anxious and couldn't help but say, "You don't believe me, do you?"
"I do," Jordan replied.
But Stella still felt like he didn't really believe her. She really wanted to show him she was fine, but just saying it wasn't enough. In the end, all she could do was sigh.
Jordan suddenly spoke up, "Stella, have you ever thought about making things real between us? I mean, maybe you could try actually being with me?"
Stella was stunned. He'd mentioned this before, but she'd turned him down back then because she didn't want to be a burden to him.
But now that her health was getting better, maybe she could actually fall in love. "Are you really sure you want to try being with me?" she asked softly.
Jordan placed his hand gently over hers. "Why are you so hard on yourself? Don't think about what you've been through. Maybe those things made you feel small, but to me, you're the best there is.
"I know you might not want to hear this, but even if your body never recovers enough to have kids, it doesn't matter to me at all. I don't care about that. I just want someone who truly gets me, someone I can connect with."
Stella was deeply moved by his sincerity.
"I know you've always been pushing me away and doubting yourself, but you really don't have to. You're amazing, Stella. Giving me a chance is also giving yourself a chance. So please, let's give this a shot," he said.
"And really, there's no rush. Take your time. Whenever you're ready, just let me know," he added gently.
Stella hesitated, her voice barely above a whisper. "But why me?"
Jordan shrugged, a little embarrassed. "There aren't really any other women around me, and even if there were, I wouldn't be interested. But with you, I kind of have a thing for you. Just a little bit," he teased.
Stella's cheeks flushed bright red. "Are you serious right now? Did you just say you like me?"
"Yeah," Jordan grinned. He had planned to wait a while before saying anything, but after hearing what Stella said last night, he just couldn't hold back. He was too worried about her to keep it in any longer.
They say drunk words were sober thoughts. If Stella didn't care deep down, she never would have said those things in that state. That was what finally gave him the courage to take a chance.
"Can I really do this?" Stella asked, her voice trembling with uncertainty.
Jordan tried to reassure her in a different way. "Have you ever thought about what people say about me? Who would actually want their daughter to end up with a guy like me?" Jordan asked.
Stella blurted out, anxious, "But that's just the image you show people. You're not really like that."
"You know the real me, but nobody else does. And with you, there's nothing complicated between us. If I married someone else, I'd have to think about all sorts of things.
"Besides, I don't have any family. No one would really care about me, you know?" he added.
Stella understood better than anyone. She knew just how much having family meant, and how it gave a person real confidence.
Neither of them had that kind of family backing, so it was not like anyone was ever going to see them as anything special.
