Jordan cut up the steak for her and placed the plate in front of her.
Stella asked, "If you did everything for me, what am I supposed to do?"
"Nothing. Just hang in there till I get it done," Jordan replied.
"Then I'll become an invalid," Stella joked.
"Don't worry. I'll never leave you alone," Jordan promised.
A sweetness spread through Stella's chest.
Back when she was young, Stella looked forward to love. She thought she and Lionel would end up together in the end. But Lionel betrayed her. It didn't make her swear off love forever, but it did kill the fantasy.
After spending these days with Jordan, she found herself willing to believe in love again, to hope for a future that might never end.
After tasting it, Stella praised, "This is good."
"You think it's good because you haven't had these in ages," Jordan said, sounding a little sheepish.
"How could that be? I think it's really good. You put so much effort into it. Besides, my taste has changed over the years. I've forgotten what steak tasted like, but I'll never forget how this tasted," Stella said, her eyes shining with appreciation.
An air of sadness settled over Jordan, but he didn't say a word about it.
"From now on, whatever you want to eat, I'll make it for you," he said seriously.
"Okay. I'll try to cook whatever you like for you, too," Stella replied with a bright smile.
"You don't have to do anything. Just be my princess," Jordan said softly.
'Princess?' Stella echoed in her heart. Her face flushed red.
Stella thought, 'I never imagined I'd be someone's princess.
'Anna was always the princess of the Hayes family. The whole family loved her. She could get whatever she wanted. I'm so green with envy because she had so many beautiful dresses.
Stella once wanted so badly to wear a beautiful dress. She snuck into Anna's room and put one on. She thought no one would notice.
But for some reason, Fiona, who had just left the house, suddenly came back and caught me red-handed. Fiona was furious and gave me a good beating.
Fiona had yelled, "How dare you wear Anna's dress? You stretched it out of shape. How is Anna supposed to wear it?
"You're all sweaty, and you put on Anna's dress. Do you think that's still going to look pretty?"
There were so many clothes in the closet. Fiona just tossed them in the trash, whether Stella had worn them or not.
Fiona'd rather toss the dresses in the trash than give them to Stella.
And after that, Fiona bought Anna even more clothes.
Mrs. Hayes wasn't home at that time, and whoever else found out about this would think it was my fault.
Stella tried to explain herself, but nobody listened to her.
Back then, Anna tried to act cute and said, "Mom, Stella likes them so much. Why not buy her some?"
But Fiona snapped, "Look at her. Do you think she can wear them? She's not worthy of wearing a dress."
All kinds of ugly words were thrown at Stella. She felt wronged and hopeless.
Finally, she could be someone's princess.
Jordan saw her crying again and immediately hurried over to her.
"What's wrong? Did I say something wrong?" he asked with concern.
Stella hugged him tightly. "No, you're doing very well. Thank you, Jordan. I'm so lucky to have you in my life. You're so good to me," said Stella.
She held him so tightly, as if she were holding the entire world.
Only then did Jordan realize that Stella wasn't upset because he'd said something wrong. It was having him there that made her feel safe and moved.
