Jordan's voice was so smooth that it felt like it made her ears tingle. The atmosphere suddenly felt perfect, and Stella wondered if there was a surprise waiting for her.
"Try this," he said, offering a pastry—Stella's all-time favorite treat.
For Stella, this was already the best surprise. "How did you know I love this pastry?"
Jordan felt a pang of sadness but shared anyway. "When your grandma was still alive, there was one time I came back early and you weren't home yet.
"So, I talked with her and learned about your likes and dislikes. She told me everything you enjoyed—food, activities, all of it."
Stella was stunned. She had never realized that someone could care about her this deeply. Not even Lionel had done something like that.
Jordan continued, "I know you can't eat sweets right now, so I've been waiting for the day you can.
"I even went to the bakery and asked them to make a special small portion for you with less sugar because I knew you couldn't have too much..."
Stella was moved to tears. Mary, standing nearby, discreetly wiped away her own tears as well.
Stella's past had been hard; aside from Eleanor, no one had ever treated her like a treasure. But now, she had finally found her true love.
"Why are you crying? Did I say something wrong?" Jordan got up quickly, feeling tense whenever Stella got emotional. He hurriedly grabbed a tissue and handed it to her.
Stella took it and, while wiping her tears, she said, "Jordan, I've told you before—when I cry now, it's not because you said something wrong. You've never said anything wrong.
"You don't have to be so cautious around me. Be yourself. I'm just crying because I'm moved by you.
"When I was little, I never had a birthday cake. Although I could eat cake, they always bought it according to Anna's preferences.
"Later, Grandma found out and secretly bought one for me, but Anna discovered it and deliberately knocked my cake to the ground so I couldn't have any.
"Even when Grandma would buy me another, it just didn't feel the same. I had actually resigned myself to a life without cake.
"I never expected that you would get me one and think of so much for me..." Stella's tears started to flow again as she spoke.
Jordan reached out and wiped her tears. "I always worry that you're too sensitive. If I say something that makes you uncomfortable, I might just fail.
"Have more confidence in yourself. Since Grandma passed, you and Mary are the only ones who treat me so well. I can't exactly run away with Mary, can I?"
Mary laughed. "You can run away with me. I'd be thrilled."
The three of them laughed together.
Jordan couldn't wait any longer. "Come on, try it! Does it taste the same as before?"
Stella nodded, picked up her fork, and took a bite. But after the first taste, she froze and didn't move.
Now it was Mary's turn to get nervous. "Ms. Hayes, are you okay? If it doesn't feel right, you can spit it out. It's fine; your husband won't blame you."
Stella pulled a ring out of her mouth. Mary was taken aback, then smiled and stepped aside. Earlier, Stella and Jordan had invited Mary to join them, but she insisted on sitting out.
