Anna didn't go to check on Max. Instead, she hurried back home. She wanted to wait for Monroe to come back.
For some reason, she just couldn't shake this uneasy feeling. It was like something bad was about to happen. With every minute that passed, that feeling only grew stronger.
She also wanted to find Andrew, but he was nowhere in sight. Suddenly, she heard some noise outside. Anna's gut told her it wasn't Andrew coming back. Someone was here for her.
She was about to make a run for it, but they moved too fast. Before she could even get out, someone had already burst through the door. Anna stared at the group of menacing strangers—none of whom she recognized.
Anna forced herself to stay calm and said, "Who are you? Who sent you? This is a private residence! Didn't anyone tell you breaking in is illegal? Do you even know whose house this is—"
Before she could finish, one of them chopped her on the shoulder with a swift strike.
As Anna crumpled to the floor, she heard the man scoff, "Why so much nonsense? What a waste of time."
Anna was jolted awake by a bucket of ice water. The first splash sent a chill straight to her bones, but the second one made her feel like she might actually freeze to death.
Before she had a chance to look up, the third bucket of ice water was already being dumped over her. Anna was chilled to the bone. The men didn't say a single word—they just kept repeating the same cruel treatment Stella had suffered in prison.
All her life, Anna had been the pampered daughter of the Hayes family. As far as everyone was concerned, even though Anna had a twin, Stella was hardly ever seen around. Most people just assumed Anna was the only daughter of the Hayes family.
Anna had never suffered this kind of humiliation before. One of the men grabbed her by the hair and viciously slammed her head against the wall, over and over, until she quickly blacked out.
"That's it? She passed out already? She's not even half as tough as Mrs. Erwin! I heard Mrs. Erwin held on for ages before she finally blacked out," one of the men scoffed.
"Hey, don't insult Mrs. Erwin. This woman isn't even worthy of serving her," another guy shot back.
"Yeah, if we hadn't been ordered to deal with her, I wouldn't have bothered. But this woman really is nasty. I heard she's done all kinds of awful things. We're just here to set things right," the other man added.
Not long after she blacked out, a fresh bucket of ice water was dumped over her. Anna jolted awake. The cold made her whole body shiver, her teeth chattering uncontrollably.
"Please, stop it! What did I do? Why are you treating me like this?" Anna cried out.
One of the men grabbed a pair of scissors and hacked at the spot where her hair hadn't even grown back yet. He said, "You really don't know what you've done?"
These guys were really cold-blooded and ruthless. Anna had grown up in upper society, and she knew all too well that a lot of those early big shots had skeletons in their closets.
They usually kept a bunch of goons on the payroll just for the dirty work, and these guys were probably exactly those kinds of people.
Anna shuddered, a chill running down her spine. She knew the usual tricks wouldn't work on these guys, so she'd have to try something desperate.
Then she started taking off her clothes. She said, "Guys, I'm not sure if I'm your type, but how about we work something out?"
But before she could even get her clothes off, one of the men yanked them back on her, forcing her to cover up.
