Mary, too, was heartbroken for Stella. She thought, 'Poor Stella. How could she be saddled with all this? That poor girl's life has been nothing but suffering.'
Eleanor instructed Mary, "Keep a close eye on them. See if they're actually looking for blood donors for Stella. If they don't help, I'll take matters into my own hands."
Despite the recent troubles in the Hayes family, Eleanor remained completely uninvolved. After all, she and her late husband had built the company from scratch, but Andrew's sheer incompetence nearly drove it into ruin.
Though it pained her to let go, Eleanor knew full well that even if she intervened, the Hayes Group would still fall into crisis after she died.
Thankfully, Max was pretty capable and managed to get the company back on track.
As for that whole mess with the Carver family, Eleanor didn't bother to deal with it either.
This didn't mean she had lost her connections all these years. She might disregard others, but Stella was someone she could never ignore.
Eleanor thought, 'My Stella. She must survive, whatever it takes.'
Mary nodded.
In recent days, the rest of the Hayes family members took turns attending to Eleanor. No matter what obstacles she threw their way, they feigned ignorance. Their patience was almost unbelievably good.
Eleanor, wise with age, could see right through them. She knew what they wanted was nothing but her shares, but she simply refused to hand them over.
Eleanor would occasionally add insult to their injury. She asked, "It has been days already. Still no word on Stella's condition?"
Fiona's face darkened, but she still forced a look of deep concern for Stella.
She replied, "No. The hospital has been looking for blood matches, and so have we. If all the donor information were registered in the database, it would be a piece of cake to find a match, but certain countries haven't uploaded their records."
Anna said, "Grandma, we actually found a potential donor yesterday, but she is pregnant and anemic. We couldn't ask her to donate, could we?
"Grandma, don't worry. Lionel said Stella's vital signs have been stable. She can hold out until we find blood matches."
Eleanor didn't believe a word they said, but she wasn't about to pick a fight either.
Once Eleanor had recovered somewhat and her family members were no longer around, she had Mary fetch a wheelchair and quietly take her to see Stella.
Stella had been bedridden for so long that she was just skin and bones. She had just put on a little weight these past few days, but now her condition took a turn for the worse again.
Eleanor couldn't hold back her tears. They spilled over once again.
Eleanor held Stella's hand and found its frailty was a stark contrast to the plump softness it had in her newborn days when her little hands were so chubby and rosy, absolutely adorable.
Eleanor thought, 'She is such a good child, who should have had a bright future. How did it come to this?'
Mary's heart ached for Stella, too.
Word came from the police station: Henry had confessed to all charges and was sentenced to death for two counts of murder, one of which was premeditated.
The villain had finally gotten his deserts, but when Stella would wake up was still unknown.
Lionel, who often visited Stella, noticed Eleanor and Mary there and approached to greet them.
Eleanor wasn't quite sure how she felt about Lionel. He used to be, apart from herself, the only one who was truly kind to Stella. But now his kindness was directed toward Anna. Eleanor found it hard to treat him the same way.
"You're here," Eleanor said flatly.
Lionel said, "Mrs. Hayes, don't worry. Stella is receiving the best possible medication. I'll do everything I can to maintain her vital signs."
Eleanor simply responded with a detached "okay".
A thought seemed to strike Eleanor. She turned to Lionel and asked, "Has the hospital still not found a blood donor match?"
