                    ADONIS.
I was sitting on a couch, staring at the TV spread out on the wall but not really seeing a thing. Neil told me Leilani was a bit sick and I briefly wondered if that had anything to do with me. She was definitely not sick, she was probably avoiding me. After she gave the food I had ordered for her to the fucking dog, I kind of figured she wouldn’t want to see me.
She’s fucking savage.
The memory of her text popped up and I chuckled. Yeah, she was definitely embarrassed. I know women a lot, and I know how many of them react in situations like this.
It was pitch-dark in the sky outside and I got up from the couch, wondering if I should go out to some strip club and spend a couple of hours watching beautiful strippers nearly get into catfights over me and leave all of them slack-jawed when I end up not going into the VIP lounges with any of them but pick out the quiet, nervous one to lavish my attention on.
My favorite pastime.
I slid out my phone to text Cole, one of my team members, the fucking stoned motherfucking party animal of our fucked up bunch. Yeah, the one who got into police fucking trouble barely two days in the city. Jade would threaten me with death once she found out I treated Cole out to a strip club overflowing with beautiful ladies without her. I was looking forward to it.
I had barely got my phone out when the doorbell rang.
I paused.
Then moved across the living room towards the door and pulled it open. A tall, slim lady stood on the porch beaming with lights with a smile on her face. I recognized her.
Brooke. Leilani’s business manager.
Her smile slipped when she saw me and her dark eyes widened, gaze fluttering.
“Brooke? Nice to see you again.” I gave her a polite smile. Well, apparently my polite smiles generally sent the wrong messages to females. And Brooke was no different. Her cheeks blushed and she brushed her hair back.
“Adonis. I-I wasn’t expecting to see you.” She said.
I stepped back, motioning to her to come in and she stepped in, eyeing my body subtly. I closed the door after her.
She walked deeper into the living room, heels clicking softly. She was dressed in almost the same style I saw her the first time we met, but her face looked slightly different. Like she had a makeover or whatever the hell girls called it.
“Can I offer you a drink?” I asked.
She turned to look at me with an expression I knew all too well. “Sure. Thanks.”
I nodded and went to get the drinks. The last time she came here was for an important discussion with Leilani. But now it was pretty late. Way too late for business talks.
When I returned with some white wine, she was sitting on a couch, fidgeting with her fingers before she realized I was coming, and stopped, relaxing her shoulders and smiling at me.
I saw through all that. She was nervous.
I handed her a glass and sat on another couch. There was silence filled with her trying to hide the fact that she was staring down my open hoodie and me catching every tiny thing she did, sipping on my drink coolly.
“Where’s Leilani?” She finally asked.
“Probably asleep. She’s not feeling too well. Neil’s with her.” The last words almost made me grimace.
“Oh, I hope she’s alright. Is it something serious?” Brooke's face filled up with concern.
“No. She’s fine.”
Her eyes were suddenly filled with questions as she regarded me quietly. Like she was surprised about something. It was the same expression she had when I opened the door.
“I can’t help but be curious, Adonis. You stay here?” She asked.
“Yeah.”
She nodded slowly, expecting me to say more but I took another sip of my drink.
“So, you’re here for business? That’s great. But I think there’s a lot of things in the city you should experience before you leave.” She gave a smile.
I recognized the look she was giving me, and I knew what she was about to say before she even formed the words.
“I could show you around.” She raised her glass at me and that gesture was awfully familiar, reminding me of someone I’d rather not think about. I felt my mood going downhill.
I wet my bottom lip. “Brooke. I know you’re trying to be friendly but I’d prefer if we left things as they are now.”
Her dark eyes held my gaze for a moment as her smile drained away. Then she looked away and I could see the disappointment she was trying to cover up. But she recovered amazingly fast and gave a casual shrug.
Then she placed her glass on a nearby stool. “One of our biggest clients is hosting an exclusive sexy beach event in a week's time. And we’re invited. Leilani’s going with Neil, we’re required to bring dates.” She slid a hand into her purse and it reappeared holding a shiny card. “I’m asking you to be my date, Adonis.” She placed the card on the shiny glass stool beside me.
I arched an eyebrow at it.
Slowly she uncurled her legs and got up to her feet. I stood up too, easily towering over her.
“You don’t have to give me an answer now. Think about it for a while and let me know what your answer is…” She gestured at the card. “...My number's right there.”
I had walked her to her car parked outside and watched her drive safely off before I turned back inside the house to pick up the card from where she placed it.
Brooke Anthony
Manager at DELEILAH fashion line.
Her numbers were staring back up at me patiently. I chuckled. I never really expected her to find the courage to actually hit on me. She seemed like the type that easily get flustered the last time we met.
But maybe she was just really good at covering up her true feelings. She was a business manager, after all, it takes a lot of self-discipline to work that kind of job. After all, I watched her brush her disappointment away in mere seconds after I had first turned her down.
Sliding the card into my pocket, I raised my phone to text Cole.
That fucker better be with his phone.
