Adonis remained cool, calm. “Take that bitch back to her fucking psychiatric hospital, Neil. You’d be happier.”
Neil moved a step forward in rage and I shot up to my feet, holding his hand and trying to hold him down as if I could actually do anything to stop him.
“Neil, stop!” I gasped, eyes wide. “What are you doing?”
“Knocking that bastard's fucking teeth out, that’s what!” Neil growled, and I felt a cold shiver pass down my spine. I have never seen Neil like this too.
Just a few minutes with this woman in the house and everyone is already at each other’s throats.
“What did you just call me?” Adonis asked, voice low, controlled and deadly.
My wide eyes snapped to look at him. My heart was pounding. I had no idea how, but his face was perfectly impassive, but I could feel the dark anger emanating from him. Shadows bathed his handsome face, and his stance was more intimidating, massive, and honed like a deadly weapon.
I had been so blinded by lust and his overwhelming attractiveness and sexual appeal that I had failed to notice how dangerous Adonis actually appeared… until now.
“I called you a fucking bastard, Adonis.” Neil spat. “You have no fucking right to talk shit on my mother, no matter what she fucking is to you, got it?”
My mind was struggling to understand what was going on, trying to piece two and two together but I was still as lost as ever.
I saw Adonis tense, even more, when Neil said the word bastard, and his eyes eclipsed. His fists clenched and he made to take a step forward, but he met my scared gaze and he stopped in his tracks.
My pulse was going crazy under my skin, as I saw the pure darkness lurking in his eyes. He was so enraged, yet it did not show on his face, the rage only burned in his beautiful eyes and pulsed out of his ripped body in deadly tendrils.
He was so dark. Shadows in his eyes and in his soul. Like an archangel of death. But it only pulled me more. I found him utterly beautiful.
His jaw clenched as he looked at me, then he broke eye contact, unclenching his fists before he turned to the door and strode out of the house. We were quiet, and soon the sound of screeching tires echoed from outside.
Oh god.
Worry stabbed me in the chest. That did not sound like good driving.
Neil let out a sigh and brushed his hands through his blond hair, sinking back onto the couch. My eyes met Ms. Declan's, only to find her already looking at me with that unnervingly piercing gaze of hers. My skin went cold. Why was she looking at me like that?
A small dark smile curved her lips as she picked up her glass and took a dainty sip like nothing ever happened.
“Why the fuck are you smiling?” Neil bit out, sending a sideways glance at her. “Do you enjoy this?”
Her lashes fluttered as she looked at him. “You know I do.” What the heck? “That was over way too fast. Ace never backs away from a fight. I wonder why he left instead…” She purred, staring at her champagne thoughtfully.
Her words gave me a prickly, chilly feeling.
Her blue eyes snapped to look at me. “Ace probably doesn’t want to scare our poor Leilani,” She curved her lips. “Isn’t that right, Neil?”
I was starting to get a distinct feeling that Neil’s mother did not like me. At all.
Neil did not reply to her. He only stood up to pull me into his arms. His eyes stared down at me soft. “I’m sorry you had to see that, babe.”
“What was that all about?” I asked back.
He sighed. “Just sibling rivalry, Leila.”
I raised my eyebrows in disbelief. Sibling rivalry? When will Neil tell me what the fuck is going on in that family of his?
We would have to talk about this later.
A hand suddenly slid between Neil and me and I was 'softly' shoved back, my shoes clapping against the floor.
“I would like to see the rest of the house, Neil.” Ms. Declan wrapped a hand on Neil’s arm. “My son would give me a tour.”
Neil gave her a tired glance before he looked at me. “I got to make an important call. I’m sure Leila would be happy to give you a tour.”
Despite the slow dread pooling in my chest, I managed to give a radiant smile. “Of course, baby.”
Ms. Declan's smile slipped. “You choose a call over your own mother?” Her silky voice was cool. But there was nothing cool in her blue eyes.
Neil pulled his arm out of her grasp, stepping away from her. “You don’t have to be so overdramatic about everything.”
His handsome face was dead serious.
She raised her chin challengingly, in a way that seemed almost haughty and exuded a whole load of self-importance. “Yes, Neil.” Her voice was scary calm. “I might be overdramatic, but you cannot ignore my question. You choose a call over me?”
Ridiculous. What the hell is this woman doing?
Neil gave her an answer. “Yes.” Then he turned and walked towards the stairs, never looking back at his mother for once.
