LEILANI.
Chase tugged on his leash as he lurched forward, nearly knocking me off balance, barking deeply and threateningly at some teenage boys who were busy ogling me from across the street.
They jolted, startled by Chase’s aggressiveness.
They started talking among themselves, increasing their pace while stealing glances at Chase who was still barking at them, his entire body rippling with deadly intent.
“Easy boy,” I said but my voice was drowned by his barking. “Chase!” I called louder, nudging him forward. He finally stopped barking when the boys were far enough and resumed his trot in front of me, sniffing the ground.
I was used to having heads turn in my direction whenever I walk past, but apparently, Chase hates all of the unnecessary attention from strangers. We were returning home from our long walk and I was in some casual light blue crop hoodie that flaunted my flat, slender belly and waistline with matching shorts that hugged my curves and ended in the middle of my thighs. The hoodie was drawn over my head while my wavy long hair poured down my chest.
We rounded into the bend that led to our house and that was when I noticed the black car slowly driving behind me. My heart thudded in alarm. I stopped in my tracks as a cold feeling chilled my guts.
It’s that car again.
The car was still approaching in that slow fashion, its tinted windows ominously glinting in the late afternoon sun and I started to panic. What should I do? Call the police? Run?? Scream for help???
Chase sensed my unease and circled around my legs protectively, nudging me with his cold wet nose while a low growl vibrated.
The car slowly moved past me and came to a stop a very few steps in front. Whoever is inside wants to render me unable to run forward. Fuck. I stumbled back, my face pale with fright.
One door at the back swung open closely followed by the driver’s door and my soul sank. It was an abduction. They had stalked me enough to want me to abduct me this time. Oh god, oh god… It all turned into slow motion in my fear-stricken mind. There was movement in the car and I knew they were coming for me now.
As my brain screamed at my legs to run, a small figure jumped out of the back seat, with messy blond hair and a...Spiderman shirt? It ran past me and another bigger figure, a plump woman in jeans hopped out of the driver’s seat and went after the little boy, hurrying past me too.
My mouth dropped open.
Soon, the woman caught the boy and pulled him back to the car, saying things like, we talked about this, Timmy.
…stop being naughty or I’ll call your dad…
What.
The.
Hell.
I stood dumbstruck and frozen as they got back in the car and drove off. My brain was confused, my mind silent, and my body stiff with shock.
I was just being paranoid this whole time. It was all in my mind this whole time. I was in panic just now over a Spiderman shirt boy and a regular woman? My shoulders started to shake, and soon I was laughing out loud at my own silliness and in relief with Chase barking, panting, and wagging his furry tail at me.
When we got back to the house, Chase bounded up the stairs and I followed, knowing he would lead me to wherever Neil was holed up in. I reached the hallway to see Chase’s tail disappear into the study and I walked in to see Neil and Adonis seated across each other on the couches at a corner of the study, hunched over some paperwork.
They both looked up as soon as I stepped in. Both swoon-worthily handsome but so different from each other.
“Hey, buddy,” Neil laughed when Chase pounced, pawing his thighs and waving his flopping tongue and tail around, excited to see its owner.
My eyes briefly locked with Adonis’ and my belly heated. His face was perfectly unreadable and I looked away at Neil instead, who seemed safe, compared to Adonis who made me feel deliciously threatened.
I smiled and walked over to him. “What are you doing, babe?” I asked softly but internally cringed at the fact that Adonis was right here. Watching this. I could feel his intense gaze on me.
“Hey, beautiful.” Neil let go of Chase to hold my waist and pull me into his lap. My face heated. Shit. His hand rubbed my bare thigh as he leaned in for a quick kiss. “We’re just working on stuff.”
I nodded stiffly. “Sounds nice.” Oh shit. Shit. Shit. Shit. I would not have come in here if I had known Adonis would be in here. They nearly had a fight yesterday, and here they were today acting like it was nothing. Or maybe it is nothing. Brothers fight all the time, right?
But that was the least of my concerns right now. Neil was touching me intimately and pressing little kisses on my head as he said some technical stuff to Adonis who replied in a more technical language in his deep voice that sounded cool and unbothered.
I had fucked that man just last night. It just felt so wrong to be curled up in Neil’s arms right in front of him.
I felt Neil's hand caress my hip, “You look damn beautiful, Leila, as always.”
I managed to smile up at him. “You look damn good yourself.”
He grinned at me and leaned in for another kiss, this time his lips moved slowly and lingering against mine. But I could not feel anything, pressed up against Neil’s chest and his arms around me. All I felt was the man sitting on the couch right across from us and probably staring at us as we kissed.
Fuck!
I broke the kiss and put a finger on his lips when he tried to reclaim my lips. “You’re in the middle of something right now, babe. By the way, I’m putting some things together for your father’s event tomorrow and I’m wondering if you want to get anything in specific for him.”
Neil raised his eyebrow. “Just get anything you want, baby.” Then his blue eyes moved past me to look at Adonis. “You know about the event, right?”
I turned to look at Adonis. His softly spiked dark hair swayed slightly as he looked up from his phone. “Yeah.”
I don’t know what I was expecting to see when I looked at him, but it definitely wasn’t what I saw on his face right now. His face was perfectly impassive, ovaries-melting handsome and unbothered as fuck. He did not even look at me.
Did Neil kissing and touching me right in front of him not bother him? Or is he just a really good actor?
“So you’re showing up this time, right?” Neil asked with a teasing tone.
Adonis was broodingly quiet.
“I mean, you’re already right in our city. I can’t think of a reason to miss it.”
He gave Neil one of his intense stares, his voice deep and deadly. “I’m not attending the event.”
“Why not?” I blurted out before I could stop myself. I could already tell this was a touchy subject for him.
His eyes moved to meet mine and for some reason, my breath caught. “I don’t have to explain myself.”
Ow. Okay.
I’ll just mind my business now.
“Don’t use that tone on her,” Neil came to my defense immediately, then he scoffed. “Dad’s turning fifty. We should all celebrate with him.”
“That’s up to me. Not you, step-brother.” Adonis leaned back in his seat, broad and ripped in the couches, dismissively looking back at his phone.
Neil let out a weary sigh.
It was the night of Dominick Giles’ golden jubilee celebration and I was dressed to kill. Even I couldn’t believe how angelically sexy I looked. I had learned that exclusive dinner events like this can be filled with so much opulence, display of wealth, and finery. Especially, when the star of the event was a rich, well-connected real estate tycoon.
I could hear the bustle downstairs as I twirled in front of the mirror. Ashley’s face filled the screen of my phone as she gushed over and over about how beautiful I looked.
“I know right?” I grinned at her.
The make-up artist standing by the dresser nodded in agreement, a grin on his face.
It was a beautiful silver dinner dress that wrapped around my curves like a second skin. The neckline was seductively low cut to expose some innocent cleavage, and the sleeves dipped down from the middle of my upper arms to my wrists. Silver arm bracelets cinched my exposed upper arms. The back of my dress dipped down to my waist, leaving the skin of my back bare to the touch. The curves of the dress on my hips morphed into high double splits that exposed my naked thighs and legs when I moved and the rest of the dress formed a regal, ethereal train a few inches behind me.
I was not wearing panties underneath.
The diamond necklace Neil got me shimmered beautifully around my neck. Glowing in time with my beautiful diamond ring.
My luscious brown hair had been styled into rippled, glossy waves hitched high up on my head and poured like a waterfall down my back with baby curls on my forehead and along the sides of my face while longer curls framed my face.
“You look like some queen from some diamond world, kid sis, what the hell?” Ashley screamed from the phone. “I need something like this in my life!” She fakes a sob.
She was right. The look was completed by my angelic makeup. Somehow, my dewy soft skin had been made to look so flawless and drool-worthy by the make-up artist. It was nude makeup, but my eyes had been made to look larger than usual and long black eyelashes framed them prettily. My lips were a dewy, soft hue of pink that looked kiss-worthy. Glittery silver eyeliner fanned my upper eyelids out to looked cat-shaped.
“You’re so good at this,” I said in awe to the makeup artist. He only grinned modestly, but his eyes shone with pride in his work. “I try my best, miss.”
I nodded in approval. “Can you help me with my shoes, please?”
“Of course.”
With his help, I slipped my small feet into diamond-studded heels that made my legs look longer than usual and inviting as fuck.
“Oh, everyone’s gonna be unable to take their eyes off you tonight, seriously.” Ashley quipped and winked salaciously.
I took one final, satisfactory glance at my reflection. “I know so.”
I spotted Neil at the foot of the stairs, in his fit dinner outfit and white suit jacket to match my dress, phone against his ear as he murmured something to the person on the line. I took in a deep breath, waiting as the makeup artist walked past me down the stairs.
Neil glanced at the makeup artist briefly and looked away, meaning to continue with whatever he was saying but then paused for a moment.
And that was when he looked back up the stairs at me. And his jaw dropped. I smiled radiantly, moving forward to put a high-heeled foot down on the first step, and then another, and another, and another.
His blue eyes were wide with pleasant appreciation and awe as he took in my appearance, his gaze running down my curvy body in the sensual dress and my bare thighs peeking out with every move I took.
The expression on his face was priceless and it struck something within me, making me think this was so similar to my wedding day sometime in the future.
By the time I got to the last step, he moved forward, eyes bright with adoration. He took my hand in his and softly, reverently kissed it.
Then whispered. “I’m such a lucky guy.”
Those words shattered something inside me. He was not lucky. Not lucky at all.
And he had no idea.
