ADONIS.
I arched an eyebrow at the picture staring up at me from the screen of my phone.
Cole, that stoned fucker, had sent it to me. He was laying on some bed with silk sheets with so many half-naked girls curled over and around him. At the corner of the picture was Tim, the timid technology geek of my team -we were all technology geeks, obviously, but Tim’s case was just fucking hopeless- and he was pressed into a large couch looking flustered and awkward as half-naked girls curled over him too.
I chuckled. More teasing material.
Under the picture, Cole had texted, even Tim turned up with me last night. Where the fuck were you? Anyway, I’m fucking glad you were absent. I wouldn’t be able to get any girl if you were here, you motherfucker.
I took a sip of my drink. Last night was a disaster. I would gladly put up with Cole's shit over that dinner party gone to shit. Fuck, all that drama and fucking madness that the old hag unleashed. That fucking bitch even had the audacity to attack Cora and Neil was being a fucking softie as usual. Fucking imp. If it were up to me, that bitch would spend the rest of her fucked up years locked the fuck up.
Last night was just a prime example of why I don’t bother with 'family events'. I had only attended the event because I found out that Freya would be there, and I knew she had something up her sleeves. If I hadn’t intervened when I did, Cora would be fucking hurt by that old bitch.
I should know.
I heard the sound of heels and I looked up to see Brooke coming down the stairs with her handbag hanging off her arm. Her eyes lit up immediately she spotted me. She strode through the living room to stand in front of me, smiling.
“I have been expecting your call,” Her voice came out soft.
I nearly forgot about that. I placed my glass away and got up from the couch, towering just a few inches away from her. I could see the rising pink in her cheeks as she stared at me with a light in her dark eyes.
“About your invitation to that event you mentioned. I’ve got other plans. You’re going to have to go with someone else,” I said flatly and straight to the point. I definitely did not want to do anything to give her hope of starting something between us.
Especially not with the way she kept looking in my eyes like she was searching for something in there.
The light in her eyes died abruptly. She blinked, the pink in her cheeks draining slowly. “B-but…”
“Here’s your card,” I slid out her shiny card from my pocket, which I had picked and placed in there after seeing her in the glass room with Leilani. Then I held it out to her.
She just stood woodenly, staring at it quietly. Her face and eyes were blank.
Then all of a sudden, she shifted like she was about to walk out on me, but a bark made her gasp and freeze. I looked in the direction of the stairs to see Neil jogging down the stairs with Chase at his heels.
When he got to the foot of the stairs, he paused. “Brooke?”
I saw her eyes widen for some unknown reason and she turned in his direction, a bright smile miraculously appearing on her face. I was beginning to notice how oddly good she was at faking emotions. And how fast.
For someone as easily flustered as her, that was saying something.
“Hey, Neil.” She said in a light tone. Then looked at the massive German Shepherd. “Hi, Chase.”
Chase let out a deep growl in response. Neil chuckled and nudged the dog with his foot. “C’mon buddy, be nice.”
Brooke let out a short laugh. “It’s okay. I’m used to it. So, looks like a stay-in day for you today.”
Neil shrugged. “I need a break.”
Another short feminine laugh. That sounded a little bit strained to me. “Don’t we all?”
“You can say that again.” He nodded then arched a suspicious eyebrow at me, giving me a look that clearly said, Don’t tell me you’re hitting on her. I glared at him and he grinned, turning around to saunter into the kitchen, with Chase -that fucking dog- dutifully following him.
When he was out of earshot, Brooke turned to look at me, dark eyes apologetic and a rueful smile on her face. It seemed that that little distraction from Neil had given her enough time to get over her disappointment.
“I completely understand, Adonis, if you’re engaged with other more important things.” She said in a business-like tone that was completely different from how she spoke to me earlier. Then she looked at the card in my fist. “You can keep the card.”
She exuded such nonchalance that could have convinced anybody that everything was okay. But not me. Definitely not me. I know people who wear masks of false emotions when I see them. I know everyday actors when I see them.
Because I am one.
I watched her walk over to the door in her heels, pull it open, and stepped out, the door moving shut behind her. I lifted my eyebrows and looked again at the card.
I know this move.
She still wants me to call her.
Neil reappeared holding a carton of milk and glass as he moved over back towards the stairs but then he paused to look at me, his fucking blue eyes twinkling mischievously.
I stared right back, making sure he knew that I was not in the mood for shit right now. He kept staring at me, trying to hide a secret smile. My stare turned into a dead glare. I hate when he does this. Why the fuck would his goddamn eyes even move in my direction? Sexy women’s, yes, but Neil’s?
Fucking.
Hell.
no.
The secret smile on his face turned into a smirk, his motherfucking eyes still staring at me in that way that made me want to knock his jaw loose.
“Why the fuck are you fucking staring, you fucking creep?” I asked flatly.
“You’re into Brooke?” He grinned.
“Mind your fucking business.”
He burst out laughing. “Right.” He then continued moving towards and up the stairs with his fucking dog following closely.
Suddenly, my phone made a ping sound. It was a text. I opened it and sure enough, it was Tina.
You don’t have a woman, sexy. Let me come over to take care of you, fuck you and ride you, Adonis Ace Giles.
A couple of nude pictures were below the text as usual, but as I stared at the text, I noticed something off about the first statement.
It sounded like she was so sure. It might just be a wild guess, but I had a feeling that I was being stalked.
