LEILANI.
“What do you mean you can’t come?” I gasped into the phone, my hand hovering over my mouth. I had been at the dinner table for a while now and the food had nearly gone cold. I had even prepared a special dinner to celebrate the successful signing of the contract, and I was ready to have a long talk with Neil to sort out the slight rift between us lately.
It was dark outside. I was alone in the house. Adonis was out, as usual, and Neil was not back from work. He only called to tell me that a very impromptu trip had been scheduled and he had to leave from work and he couldn’t make it to the beach event.
He is my date!
“I’m sorry, babe…” He said on the other side of the line, launching into an explanation of why he couldn’t attend the event. This was a very bad development. It was an elite event. Dates were required and I was an honored guest.
It was too late to start looking for a date now.
“Is this payback for signing that contract?” I asked, eyebrows furrowed.
Neil groaned at the other side. “For fuck's sakes, Leila, haven’t you been listening-”
“Don’t curse at me, Neil.” I snapped. He was quiet for a moment until he said. “Sometimes, try to think about others and not just yourself. Not everything is about you, Leila.”
Then he hung up.
I held the phone frozen, my mouth open. What the hell just happened? After a moment or two of staring into space, I carefully got up from the dining chair, looking at the dinner I had taken time and effort to prepare. Something churned in my belly and I took in a deep breath, trying to fight that feeling of abandonment and neglect that liked to slither into my mind in moments like this. Neil would have to explain himself better when he gets back.
I don’t have time to sulk. I have to find a date as soon as possible. Turning away from the table, hair and hips swaying, I focused my energy on my phone instead.
Adonis.
His name was like a whip crack in the echoes of my mind. He does not like outings like these, I guess. But maybe, maybe I could get him to come with me.
Wait. I was upset with him. I could not ask him this when I feel so pissed at him. Fuck.
What should I do?
I decided that I would try as many guys tonight as possible. Adonis would be the last resort. Honestly, I knew it would be very easy for me to get a man to be my date, but that would just be giving my many admirers more avenues to try to get intimate with me. And that was something I definitely did not want.
But I don’t have much of a choice now.
ADONIS
I drove Brooke back to her apartment. She had not brought her car with her because she had been planning to get very drunk, and she would order a ride back home since she would not be in the state to drive.
During the drive, she had calmed down, and she was collecting herself impressively, though she remained quiet throughout the ride. When I pulled up in front of the huge glass apartment building she lived in, we both stepped out of the Jeep.
“This is where I stay.” She said, gazing directly up at me. She had taken off her heels and cleaned off the smudged makeup on her face. Aside from the slight redness of her eyelids and nose, she was nearly back to normal. Her voice was soft, tentative. “Will you come in?”
I knew the look in her eyes and from that, I predicted what her next words were before she even uttered them. She wanted me to spend the night over. Sleep with her.
“No, thanks,” I said.
She regarded me for a moment before she nodded. Then she walked closer to me, without her heels, she had to look way up to meet my eyes. “Thank you, Adonis. For saving me.”
“It’s really nothing,” I said in a casual monotone.
She smiled. “It’s something to any woman.” She paused thoughtfully. “And your lady friend. I wasn’t trying to be rude to her.”
I nodded. “I know.” A police car barreled past, sirens blaring and my eyes followed it till it disappeared around a bend. I looked back at Brooke only to have her fling her arms around my neck and go on her tiptoes, her body pressed into my chest, taking me by surprise.
And her lips pressed against mine.
