                    LEILANI.
What?
Adonis?
Brooke’s date was actually Adonis? My eyes were wide with shock, and my feet were rooted to the spot, the music and noise of the party fading together into mute in the background, as my eyes watched them walk closer to us.
They were not in matching beach outfits like Jake and I, but they sure as hell looked like a couple. A pretty gorgeous couple, mainly because of a certain gorgeous man. Thousands of questions were reeling in my mind.
So Brooke and Adonis were kind of relating to each other all this time?
Is this why she did not tell me who her date was?
Realization slowly pooled in my mind as I remembered how Brooke had been stopping by the house, more often than usual. It could have been because of Adonis.
Is he the reason she started buying sexy lingerie all of a sudden? Something very unpleasant clenched around my guts as my palms clammed. Had he suddenly had his fill of me and since I refused to go with him on a trip out of the city for sex, he had moved on to Brooke instead? My thoughts were all over the place but I knew I had to keep it together and process it all with a clear head. I have been under quite some stress lately, and I tend to overreact and jump into conclusions way so quickly recently.
I have to relax.
Brooke finally reached us, smiling. “Leila! You look so-” Her words vanished into thin air as her sharp dark eyes slid over to my side to rest on Jake. Surprise colored her features, eyebrows slightly furrowed. “Jake! How-” She looked from him to me, from me to him and again.
I guess tonight’s full of surprises.
Jake let out a grin. “I know you’re surprised to see me here. I’m Leila's date.” He clarified, then motioned at Brooke’s outfit. “You look great, by the way.”
Like a magnet, my eyes were drawn and glued to Adonis who was standing right in front of me. He looked so heavenly. A midnight black, velvety durag wrapped his hair, accentuated his strong jaw and chiseled features. The long black fabric of the durag draped down his neck to skirt over his upper back, long straps reaching down his shirtless chest.
Shirtless.
His torso was ripped and built and very naked and some black shorts rode low on his hips. He was barefoot too, like Brooke. The studs in his ears were onyx black and glimmered in the lights of the party. He was so handsome, it almost felt demonic.
I was subtly checking him out, while he, on the other hand, was brazenly raking his gaze over my body not give a flying fuck about the fact that his date was standing right beside him.
“I really never expected to see you, Jake.” Brooke’s voice broke into our lustful staring contest and my eyes snapped to her. Her voice almost sounded apologetic and my eyebrow lifted slightly, wondering why she said it in that tone.
“Why’s Neil not here?” Adonis asked, arching a perfect dark brow at me.
“Business,” I replied straightforwardly and in a succinct tone. Brooke nodded and suddenly grabbed Adonis’ arm, breaking into a bright smile. Jealousy speared through me at the sight of her holding his naked arm against her body covered in just a thin cover-up that blew in the breeze and if I remember correctly, all of the bikinis she had gotten from DELEILAH were very naughty and revealing. She could be wearing one of those beneath that cover-up.
And she was smiling so much tonight in a way that was totally unlike Brooke.
“Let me do the introductions.” She started. Then she looked up at Adonis. “Adonis, this is Jake, from work. And Jake, this is Adonis, my friend.”
Friend?
“He’s my fiancé's brother,” I added, glancing over at Jake. I had no idea what pushed me to say that, but some feminine and territorial part of me wanted to subtly, discreetly point out the fact that Brooke only met Adonis through me.
Toxic, I know.
I think Adonis noticed what I just did because something devilish gleamed in his dark mesmerizing eyes at my words.
“Nice to meet you, man,” Jake said, friendly as ever, holding out his hand for a shake. Jake had been taking in Adonis’ appearance ever since he and Brooke walked up to us and I could tell Jake felt kind of intimidated and insecure. I mean, Adonis was literally a demi-god, what man wouldn’t feel inadequate standing next to him?
Adonis gave Jake a nod in acknowledgment and shook his hand. The flexing of his muscular and toned forearm caught my eye immediately. I had noticed that Adonis had also given Jake some kind of once-over with those accessing, dark eyes of his – when, of course, he wasn’t looking up the gap of my cover upskirt to see my bare ass or focusing his dirty, beautiful gaze through the see-through fabric to watch my red thong dip deliciously between my thighs.
Though I wished I could believe it, but it almost seemed like he was trying to decide if Jake was competition.
The thought of Adonis being possessive of me sent butterflies tickling my belly, but that was just wishful thinking. If he had no problems with me being someone’s fiancée, why would he have a problem with some random guy?
After all, it’s just sex. Nothing else.
The sight of Brooke’s fingers on his tan skin made the knot of jealousy in my chest grow bigger. But it’s just for tonight, right? I don’t have anything against Brooke but seeing her get closer and closer to the man I was lusting after, seeing her hold him, touch that beautiful skin of his when it was mine to feel, grope and grab, just felt wrong.
It made me feel all kinds of mixed-up emotions inside. Among all of that, I was starting to feel that familiar dull sting of neglect.
