"Shane?" My breath caught in my throat as I stared at him, barely recognizing the man in front of me.
His once-bright eyes were hollow, his hair streaked with gray as if aged by decades in a single night. If I hadn't known him, I might've thought he was the ghost, not me.
"Nat?" Shane pushed himself up weakly, his designer clothes wrinkled and stained, cigarette butts clinging to his sleeves like some kind of pathetic confetti. "You're here. Finally. Thank God—you're still here. I still have you..."
I met his desperate gaze with icy detachment. "You're wrong. I'm only here to settle the divorce."
His grip tightened on my sleeve, fingers trembling. "No. No, that's not true. You still love me. Don't you?"
A bitter laugh threatened to escape me. "I'm sorry? You're sorry?" My voice dripped with disdain. "Cheating on me with Hailey wasn't a mistake, Shane. It was a choice. And now she's nowhere to be found, is she? Funny how that works."
His face twisted into something ugly. "You think I don't know? All those vultures—our so-called family—they only cared when my parents were alive. Now? They couldn't even show up to the funeral. They're just waiting to pick my bones clean."
I pulled my arm free. "Not my problem." The divorce papers slid across the table toward him. "Sign it."
His hand shook as he picked up the pen, scrawling his name like it took every last ounce of strength he had left.
I didn't look back as I walked away.
And just like that, Shane Carter ceased to exist in my world.
