My parents never blamed me for divorcing Shane. Their only question was whether he'd treated me badly over the years.
Their worry touched me. Looking back, I couldn't believe I'd been so reckless—throwing everything away for a man like him.
I had loving parents, a solid education, a career I was proud of. My life had been happy, full. So why had I convinced myself love and marriage were worth sacrificing it all?
"My life is just beginning," I told them. "From now on, I'm living for myself."
Then, days later, the police called. Shane had murdered someone. He was behind bars.
I sighed, unimpressed. "And why exactly does that involve me?"
"Ms. Swanson," the officer said carefully, "the suspect is demanding to see you. He's threatening suicide if you refuse."
I scoffed. "And why should I care if he does?"
After relentless pressure, I finally caved and went to the prison.
Shane's bloodshot eyes locked onto me through the glass. The second he saw me, he broke down—sobbing like a madman, babbling apologies, begging me not to leave him.
I stared back, ice in my veins. "Did you kill Hailey?"
"She deserved it!" he screamed. "She murdered my parents! If it wasn't for her, none of this would've happened!"
That's when I learned the truth.
Shane had married me out of obligation—a debt for saving his life. But when Hailey returned from studying abroad, jealousy twisted her.
She hired thugs to fake his parents' kidnapping, planning to force them to make Shane divorce me so she could take my place.
But her plan backfired.
One of the men she hired had his own agenda—the McClure fortune. When Hailey refused to pay up, screaming at them instead, he snapped.
