I marched toward the police station with purposeful strides, my heels clicking against the pavement like a ticking clock. The report was filed, but this was far from over.
Then my phone buzzed—an unwelcome interruption. I glanced at the screen and grimaced. Jimmy Fletcher. Shane's obnoxious cousin. Of course.
I answered, bracing myself.
"Seriously?" Jimmy's voice oozed disdain before I could even say hello. "Filing fake police reports now? What's your damage? Did Shane not crush your ego enough already?"
Typical. The Fletchers had always treated me like dirt—except for Shane's parents. And that was exactly why I had to save them.
I kept my voice steady. "Jimmy, did Shane actually tell you I filed a false report?"
The silence on the line was deafening. I smirked.
"Funny. As a cop, you're supposed to respond to emergencies, not harass the person reporting one. If you don't send help, I'll file a complaint against you so fast your badge won't know what hit it."
Jimmy didn't even pretend to be professional. He exploded. "Newsflash—marrying Shane doesn't make you special! You're still just some nobody from a nowhere town. Hell, you're like a walking bad luck charm for this family. If I were you, I'd have jumped off a bridge by now!"
His voice dripped with venom. "Let's be real—if Hailey hadn't left the country, Shane would've never settled for you. You're not even good enough to be her stand-in, you pathetic waste of space."
I hung up without a word, my fingers moving mechanically as I filed another report—this time, with Jimmy's name front and center.
At the station, I laid everything out for the officers: Shane's parents, the abduction, the recording, the burner number. The tech team scrambled into action, but the trail went cold fast.
The kidnapper's voice was digitally scrambled. The number was a ghost—untraceable, unreachable. Dead end.
"I've got ten million in my account," I said, reaching for my wallet. "That should cover whatever we need to—"
My hand froze. My credit card sat in two jagged pieces. And my account? Frozen. By Shane.
The bastard had cut me off.
