I took a deep breath and dialed my secretary at the company.
"How much cash can we pull together and transfer in the next ten minutes?" I demanded.
"Fifteen million," she answered without hesitation.
"Good. Move it to my account now."
Tracking the kidnappers wasn't an option—paying up was the only way. Twenty million was a fortune, but if it meant saving Shane's parents, I wouldn't hesitate.
Still five million short, I ran through my options fast and called Craig Fletcher, Shane's uncle.
"Uncle Craig, Shane's parents have been taken. We're five million short on the ransom. Can you cover it? I'll pay you back the second they're safe."
A sharp inhale. "My sister's been kidnapped? Does Shane know?"
I exhaled, keeping my voice steady. "I told him. He doesn't believe me—he's at the hospital with Hailey right now. You're the only one who can help."
"Don't move. I'm wiring the money now!"
The second the call ended, the kidnappers rang again.
"Time's up. Where's our money?"
My stomach twisted, but I kept my tone level. "Almost there. Just give me a little more time. You'll get every dollar."
Their voice turned razor-sharp. "Bring the twenty million now. Not a penny less, or they're dead."
I clenched my fist, forcing calm into my words. "Thirty more minutes! If my in-laws are alive, you'll have the full amount!"
Then I heard it—Shane's parents sobbing in the background, raw with terror.
The kidnapper's voice dropped to a lethal whisper. "No money in thirty minutes? You'll be picking up their corpses."
