I spun around just in time to see Jimmy walking past—his face ghostly white. He'd overheard everything.
"Nat, is this for real? Shane's parents actually got kidnapped?" His voice cracked. "But Shane told me they were just helping you with some act..."
Too drained to argue, I waved him off. "Call Shane yourself. Tell him the truth."
My eyes kept darting to the clock. Five million dollars—with Craig's connections, the transfer should've been instant. When the silence dragged on, I grabbed my phone.
"Uncle Craig?"
The moment he answered, I heard the disappointment in his sigh. "Nat, sweetheart, lies have consequences," he said, exhaustion weighing down every word. "Shane's parents were the only ones who ever showed you kindness in that family."
My stomach dropped.
"I tried helping you out of pity," he continued, "but this victim act? It's getting pathetic. A good man like Shane wouldn't hate you if you weren't such a compulsive liar."
Fingers trembling, I clutched the phone tighter. "Did Shane tell you I made this up?" My voice shook. "The police are right here—they'll confirm everything—"
"Enough!" Another sigh, heavier this time. "Stop hiring actors to fool me. Even if you succeed today, you can't lie to yourself forever."
His tone turned almost gentle. "Nat, I get it—you love him. But he's moved on. That girl's back in his life. If it hurts this much, just sign the divorce papers."
I slammed the phone down mid-sentence, my hands shaking with fury.
Their lives were on the line, and his family was using it as ammunition against me.
Across the room, Jimmy finally got through. "Shane, listen! This isn't a joke—your parents were taken! The police—"
Hailey's bored drawl cut in. "Jimmy, really? What's Natalie paying you? I'll triple it."
"You think this is funny?" Jimmy snapped.
I heard the phone shuffle before Shane's icy voice came through. "Enough, Jimmy."
