The second he spotted me, a bitter laugh escaped his lips. "Getting a kick out of this, are you? You really went all in—even roped the cops into your little charade to mess with me."
I kept my eyes down, avoiding his gaze. "Do you seriously think I have that kind of pull? Shane's parents' bodies are already at the funeral home. Tell him to get over there now."
Craig's frown deepened as he took in the grim faces of the officers nearby. "You—stop messing around. This isn't funny. Nat, just say it's an act! Tell me you're lying to screw with me! Say it's a sick joke, and I swear I won't even be mad!"
I exhaled slowly, watching him unravel with eerie calm.
I might've offered some empty comfort, but then he snapped, his voice dripping with venom. "This is on you! Why couldn't you just admit you weren't acting? You got them killed—you're a murderer!"
Any pity I had vanished, replaced by icy detachment. My voice turned razor-sharp. "I told you the truth. Shane's the one who insisted I was faking it. You believed him. Now you get to live with that."
Craig crumpled to the floor like a puppet with cut strings. Grabbing my sleeve, he broke into ragged sobs. "I can't—I can't tell Shane about his parents. Please, I'm begging you. Do it for me. Just this once."
I was about to refuse when a thought struck me. After a beat, I nodded.
Stepping out of the station, I dialed my lawyer immediately. "Mr. Zane, draft up divorce papers ASAP. Be ready to file."
Hanging up, I headed straight for Shane's place, grabbing the divorce agreement on the way.
When I got there, Shane and Hailey had just walked in. Shane looked like hell—like he hadn't slept in days.
