Shane's face went ice cold. With a mocking smirk, he drawled, "You're joking, right?"
"Dead serious," I shot back.
He snatched up his pen with a dismissive flick of his wrist. "Sure, sweetheart, I'd be thrilled. Just don't come bawling at my doorstep post-divorce. That'd be a real pain in my ass."
I barked out a laugh. "Wouldn't dream of it."
The pen scratched across the paper—one sharp stroke, his signature bleeding black onto the pristine sheet.
"Wait!" Hailey's face drained of color the second she glimpsed the agreement. Her shriek pierced the room. "Shane, look at the asset clause! This gold-digging bitch is trying to steal your parents' entire inheritance! I won't let—"
Shane yanked the papers from her, his eyes widening as they darted across the page. When they snapped up to meet mine, they burned with betrayal. "You're out of your damn mind, Natalie. My parents? Their money was never yours to take."
I exhaled slowly. "Their dying wish disagrees with you."
His knuckles whitened around the documents. "Prove it."
I couldn't.
Pulling out a second agreement—one that left me penniless—I slapped it onto the table. "Here's your out. Sign the first if you believe me. The second if you don't. Either way, I'm done with you and your family's drama."
Shane froze, the pen hovering mid-air.
Then his phone buzzed. Craig's name flashed on the screen.
He answered with a terse "Yeah?"—only for the room to flood with raw, gut-wrenching sobs.
"Shane—get to the funeral home now! Your parents... they were murdered. My sister's gone!" Craig's voice shattered into incoherent weeping.
Hailey sprang off the bed, clutching Shane's arm. "Your uncle's laying it on thick. What'd Natalie pay him to spin this sick lie—?"
Shane didn't speak. His face darkened like a storm rolling in, something ugly and unspoken coiling tight in his chest.
