I was just stepping out when Shane's shaky voice stopped me in my tracks. "If... If something really happened to my parents, why the hell didn't you tell me last night?"
A bitter laugh escaped my lips. "Funny how your memory works. I did try telling you - you blocked my number and left me on read."
Shane frantically scrolled through his muted messages, each one hitting him like a punch to the gut.
"Shane, I'm at Central Bridge now. Get here ASAP!"
"Shane, your parents are in critical condition."
"Where are you, man?"
"Shane... I don't think they're gonna pull through. They're asking for you."
"Meet us at the funeral home."
The messages cut off there. Shane's phone nearly slipped from his trembling hands.
A sick, disbelieving grin twisted his face. "Bullshit. This is all bullshit. I'm calling Jimmy - he'll tell me the truth."
But when Jimmy picked up, his frantic voice only confirmed Shane's worst fears. "Shane! Thank God! Get to the funeral home now! Uncle Craig's there alone and with his heart condition, I don't know how much more he can take—"
Shane ended the call mid-sentence.
His legs gave out as he crumpled to the floor, muttering "No... no, this isn't happening..." like a broken record.
Hailey rushed over to help, but Shane violently shoved her away. "Get the hell away from me!"
I didn't even glance back as I walked out. Some wounds you just can't bandage.
