The night bled crimson.
Elijah ducked just in time as a bullet ripped through the rotted wood behind him, splinters showering his neck. He rolled, heart hammering, adrenaline taking over. His breath came in sharp gasps as he darted into the trees behind the safehouse.
He had no idea who they were—only that they didn’t come to negotiate.
The signal had been too strong. Too exposed.
He should’ve known.
He sprinted across uneven terrain, lungs burning, dodging gunfire until the trees swallowed him whole.
When silence returned, it was absolute.
He collapsed beneath a low pine and clutched the flash drive he’d just retrieved.
Still intact.
Blood smeared his sleeve from a graze on his side.
But he was alive.
And now he knew: someone didn’t want Damien found.
Miles away, Arielle met Mason at a crumbling café beneath flickering bulbs. The man across from them was thick with scars and darker secrets. His name was Orlov. Damien once called him “the gatekeeper of gray truths.”
Arielle stared him down, unblinking.
“I want my son,” she said. “And I want the truth.”
Orlov’s laugh was low and unsettling.
“You always had fire, Arielle. Like him.”
He slid over a photo.
Damien.
Bearded. Bruised. Alive.
In a chain-link cage.
She almost dropped the image.
“Where is he?”
Orlov leaned in. “Your husband got too close to something. Something buried. They don’t kill men like him. They hide them. Break them. Use them.”
“Where?” she repeated.
“Even if I told you,” he rasped, “you’d never reach him.”
Mason’s hand twitched toward his weapon.
Arielle stopped him with a look.
“You want money?” she asked.
Orlov shook his head slowly.
“I want revenge.”
Later, in the darkened car, Arielle stared at the photo.
Damien’s eyes—so tired, but still burning—haunted her.
“He’s alive,” she whispered.
Mason tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
“And so is Elijah,” she added, voice shaking. “But we’re running out of time.”
At dawn, Elijah dragged himself to a hidden village two hours east. An old woman patched his wound with gentle hands and whispered prayers.
“Who are you running from?” she asked in broken English.
“Not running,” he murmured. “Searching.”
She touched his face kindly. “Then may you find what you lost... before they find you again.”
Outside, two black cars approached the horizon.
