The sterile light of the waiting room hummed too brightly against the gloom pressing down on Damien’s shoulders.
He sat forward in the uncomfortable plastic chair, elbows on his knees, Arielle’s wedding ring clenched between his palms like a lifeline.
Across from him, Iris held Lily tight as Jonah softly whispered lullabies in their little sister’s ear.
Elijah hadn’t moved in over twenty minutes. He stood facing the ICU door, rigid, as though willing it to open through sheer force of hope.
It did.
Finally.
And with it came the doctor.
Damien rose to his feet too fast, his vision swimming before the image of the woman in scrubs solidified.
The doctor looked tired.
More than that—she looked unsettled.
Not the kind of unsettled that came from witnessing grief.
The kind born from confusion.
From the unknown.
“Please,” Damien rasped. “Tell me she’s okay. Tell me the baby’s okay.”
The doctor nodded slowly. “She’s stable. For now. But…”
That pause landed like a slap.
“…there’s something we didn’t expect.”
Silence snapped the room in two.
“I’m sorry?” Damien stepped forward.
“The pregnancy…” The doctor folded her arms, her clipboard held tightly against her chest. “It’s not just risky. There’s an anomaly. One we’ve… frankly, we’ve never encountered before.”
The children all looked up.
“What kind of anomaly?” Elijah asked, his voice low and sharp.
The doctor sighed. “We ran scans. Her vitals are stabilizing, but the fetus—your baby—it’s developing in a way we can’t explain. There are patterns in the scans… things that shouldn’t be there. Not in a normal pregnancy. Not even in complicated cases.”
Damien’s chest seized. “Is it genetic? Did I—”
She shook her head. “We don’t know. But the fetus’s heart rate fluctuated earlier in a synchronized pattern with Arielle’s neural responses. It's as if... they're communicating. More directly than what should be physiologically possible.”
Iris gasped. Jonah looked pale.
“You’re saying…” Elijah began, but the doctor cut in.
“I’m saying we’re witnessing something extraordinary. But it comes with danger. For both of them. Her organs are under strain. And if this pattern continues, we may have to make a decision no family should ever face.”
The world tilted.
Damien reached for the wall, steadying himself.
“What kind of decision?” he whispered.
“I need to run more tests,” she said. “And I’ll explain more when I have solid answers. But… prepare yourselves. This isn’t just a high-risk pregnancy. It’s something else entirely.”
She stepped away, but turned at the door.
“One more thing,” she added. “Arielle murmured something before she slipped back under. She said, ‘The light speaks.’ Does that mean anything to any of you?”
No one answered.
The door shut behind her.
And in the quiet that followed, Damien sank slowly to the floor.
Elijah’s hand was on his shoulder.
Jonah’s breathing came ragged.
Lily blinked wide, uncomprehending eyes.
And Arielle—
Arielle was somewhere on the other side of those sterile doors.
With a child who might be more than anyone expected.
Or could ever understand.
