The sound of chaos was unmistakable.
It began with a crash, followed by loud giggles, then a high-pitched declaration of, "I now pronounce you husband and wife!"
Arielle sat bolt upright on the couch, her cup of tea sloshing as Damien peeked around the corner from the kitchen, spatula in hand.
“Should we be worried?” he asked.
Arielle’s eyes narrowed. “Very.”
They followed the trail of giggles down the hallway, past a tipped-over laundry basket, a half-unrolled toilet paper roll, and what appeared to be an aisle of flower petals hastily torn from the faux hibiscus plant on the console table.
Then, in the sunroom, they found them.
Their daughter stood at the front of the room, barefoot and beaming, her hair pinned up with glittery butterfly clips, and a white scarf trailing from her shoulders like a veil. Across from her stood their eldest son, face serious, wearing a too-large bowtie over his dinosaur T-shirt. Their youngest had a paper crown on his head and a makeshift bowtie drawn on his onesie in purple marker.
“We are gathered here today,” their daughter announced in a singsong voice, “to join these two in eternal make-believe love!”
Damien covered his mouth.
Arielle choked on a laugh.
“Are we officiating or observing?” Damien whispered.
“Don’t you dare interrupt this masterpiece,” Arielle hissed.
Their daughter continued. “Do you, Princess Luna Sunshine, promise to love and share your chocolate forever?”
“I do!” their son replied, his chest puffed out like a true gentleman.
“And do you, Sir Mighty Roar, promise to protect her from all bedtime monsters and let her pick the bedtime story at least sometimes?”
“I do,” she said solemnly.
“Then you may hug your pretend spouse!”
The kids embraced with giggles and a dramatic dip that nearly knocked them over.
Damien leaned close to Arielle. “I think we just witnessed their first fake marriage.”
“Better than their first real heartbreak,” she murmured, warmth blooming in her chest.
Later, they sat on the porch, the island quiet around them as the kids napped after the exhausting theatrics.
“They really mimic everything, don’t they?” Arielle said, sipping coconut water.
Damien nodded. “They watch us more than we realize.”
She looked out toward the sea. “Do you think we’re giving them a good example?”
He reached over, lacing their fingers together. “We’re giving them the truth. Love isn’t perfect. But it’s patient. Forgiving. Real.”
She smiled softly. “I’m glad they see us come back to each other. Even after hard things.”
He kissed her hand. “They’re learning what it means to choose love. Not just feel it.”
They sat in silence for a moment, watching the sun begin its descent. The air buzzed with peace.
Inside the villa, a little voice called out.
“Mama! Daddy! We need cake for our honeymoon!”
Arielle burst out laughing. “Well. At least they have their priorities straight.”
That evening, they baked cupcakes with the kids. The pretend wedding became a pretend honeymoon party. The entire living room turned into a pillow fort resort. Damien wore a towel like a cape and declared himself the Royal Room Service King. Arielle danced barefoot with the baby in her arms while the others twirled around them.
It was chaotic. Loud. Beautiful.
Later, when the children were asleep and the stars glittered above the island like shattered diamonds, Damien pulled Arielle into his lap by the firepit.
“Promise me we’ll always keep some of this magic,” he whispered.
“We will,” she murmured. “As long as we remember to keep playing pretend. Even as grown-ups.”
And in that moment, they weren’t just parents. They were partners in a kingdom of forts and fairy lights, of vows and second chances, of giggles and grace.
Because sometimes, love looked like chaos.
And sometimes, chaos was love—dressed up in butterfly clips and chocolate-smeared promises.
