The hospital waiting room was colder than Arielle remembered. Not in temperature, but in spirit. It smelled faintly of antiseptic and too much lavender air freshener—an unholy mix that turned her stomach. Damien sat beside her, both hands clasped tightly as if in prayer. Neither of them spoke.
Their children were home with Damien’s mother. Emory had asked if they were getting another sibling. The question had sliced right through Arielle’s ribs.
“No, sweetie,” she’d said, tucking him into bed the night before. “Not this time. Just... checking something important.”
He’d nodded and hugged her so tightly she could barely breathe.
Now, the wait for the final truth ticked by second after second. The DNA test. A full-panel analysis from the hospital. The test they should have done from the start. A hospital-controlled chain of custody. No room for error. No tampering. No doubt.
The door creaked open. A man in his sixties, wearing a dark grey coat over his lab coat, entered with calm gravity. Dr. Hanley. The family geneticist.
He held a plain manila envelope in one hand. It was thicker than Arielle expected. Weighted.
She stood slowly. Damien followed.
The doctor didn’t sit. He simply looked between the two of them and said, “The results are here.”
He held out the envelope.
Damien reached for it. His hands trembled.
Arielle’s heart pounded so loud she swore the fluorescent lights flickered in time with it. The room tilted. She swayed, but Damien steadied her.
He glanced at her.
“Together?”
She nodded.
He opened the flap. Slowly. Carefully. As if afraid the truth might bleed through the paper and scar them.
Inside, a crisp document. Folded once. Medical letterhead. Confidential. Final Results.
Damien unfolded the sheet.
He scanned the first lines. Then stopped. His eyes didn’t widen. They darkened.
Arielle reached for the paper.
And then—
FLASH.
The fluorescent light above them flickered again.
A voice from the hallway echoed in. “Emergency in Pediatrics, Room 2!”
The world kept turning.
Arielle’s fingers grazed the edge of the paper—
But Dr. Hanley stepped forward, firm.
“There’s something you both need to know,” he said, tone grave. “Before you read that.”
Damien blinked. “What?”
Dr. Hanley looked tired. Deeply, spiritually tired. “There was... a discrepancy. A mismatch in the metadata between this test and the one submitted by Luciana Vero.”
Arielle froze. “What kind of discrepancy?”
“The child from that test? And the one tested under supervision here? Different birth profiles. Slight but enough. Either the sample was tampered with... or the wrong child was tested the first time.”
Damien’s hands dropped. The envelope fluttered from his grip.
Arielle stared at it on the linoleum floor. The truth. Right there.
But now there was another truth—twisted beneath the surface.
“You’re saying... Emory might not be Damien’s?”
Dr. Hanley nodded. “I’m saying... the first test may not have told you the full story.”
Arielle gasped.
And the screen cut to black.
