It started with a ping.
Arielle was pouring honey into tea when her phone buzzed. Then buzzed again. And again.
She set the jar down and picked up her phone. Notifications flooded the screen.
Her heart dropped.
BREAKING: CEO HEIR NOT HIS?
Paternity Scandal Shocks Laurent Family.
Exclusive Source Claims Damien Laurent NOT Biological Father of Son.
She blinked, re-reading each headline. Her breath shortened. Her pulse raced.
Noah was at school. Damien was in a board meeting. The world was on fire.
And her son—her son—was being dragged into a lie.
By the time she arrived at the PR office, she was trembling with fury. “How did this happen?” she barked.
Gwen, their head of PR, handed her the tabloid. “Anonymous tip. Claims Noah was born during your split from Damien. They’re pushing the angle hard.”
Arielle stared at the cover—Noah’s photo blurred, but still too revealing.
“This is slander,” she hissed. “He’s seven. He’s a child.”
“We’ve already issued a cease and desist, but they’re claiming ‘freedom of press.’”
Arielle clenched her fists. “Where’s Damien?”
Damien arrived minutes later, his face like stone.
He didn’t speak as he reviewed the article. Then he stood.
“Find out who leaked it,” he said quietly.
Arielle touched his arm. “You don’t believe any of it?”
He turned to her.
“I held him the second he was born. I watched you nearly die bringing him into this world. That boy has my eyes, my hands, my temper.” He paused. “I would burn cities for him.”
But the damage was already rippling.
At school, kids whispered.
Noah didn’t want to go back.
Arielle held him in her arms, listening to his sobs. “Why are they saying Daddy’s not my real dad?”
She kissed his curls. “Because some people lie when they don’t have anything real in their own lives.”
That night, Damien appeared on a live news segment.
He didn’t let his PR team vet the questions.
“Is there any doubt about Noah’s paternity?” the anchor asked.
Damien’s voice was even.
“No. There has never been a doubt. And if anyone believes otherwise, they’re welcome to take it up with me directly. In court.”
He held up a small photo—Noah as a baby, asleep on his chest.
“I am his father in every way that counts. And in every way that matters.”
The next day, Arielle found a printed apology on her doorstep.
But she didn’t care.
What mattered was Noah.
And as she watched Damien play chess with their son that evening, their heads bent in silent focus, her heart eased.
Their truth didn’t need headlines.
It lived in laughter.
In hugs.
In the fierce, undying loyalty that had always, always been there.
