"My father might've raised you as potential husbands, but he'd never force it," I said. "If any of you had just said no, he would've cut you a fat check and sent you off with his blessing."
"Face it—you're all just scared of losing your shot at the Montclair fortune."
Griffin Carver, ever the hothead, scoffed. "That's a pretty speech. Like we don't know the truth—we're living under your roof, charity cases at best. Your family's trained dogs. Where exactly do you think we'd get the right to refuse?"
Jasper's expression darkened as he met my eyes. "If you want to pick me, then pick me. Just promise you won't make life hell for these two afterward."
The way Finn and Griffin looked at him—moved by his so-called sacrifice—made my stomach twist. Jasper's martyr act was like swallowing poison.
Before I could respond, Doria Gallet appeared out of nowhere. The second she saw me, she shrank behind Jasper like I was something to be afraid of.
Jasper instinctively shielded her. "She hasn't done anything. Just leave her alone today."
I stared at them, baffled. All three men—who were supposed to protect me—were now standing guard in front of Doria, as if I were the monster.
Five years ago, when Doria first arrived at the estate, she'd given me a hair clip. I'd returned the gesture with a $1,000 bracelet—a welcome gift.
But when I opened the box of pastries she'd brought, Jasper yanked it from my hands.
"Even her dead mother's keepsake isn't off-limits to you?" he snapped.
I turned to Doria, expecting her to explain she'd given it to me willingly.
Instead, she dropped to her knees, tears streaming. "It wasn't Miss Montclair who took it—I gave it to her! She's been so kind to me, even giving me this bracelet. I'm not upset, really!"
Then she started banging her forehead against the floor in this over-the-top display. The three men looked like they were about to cry, like her little performance reminded them of their own pitiful positions.
They jumped in like knights in shining armor:
Finn glared. "Even as the Montclair heiress, you don't get to pressure someone into handing over their mother's memento."
Griffin barked, "That clip might be cheap, but it's worth more than your thousand-dollar bracelet. Give it back!"
Jasper shook his head. "Classic Charlotte—only caring about what you want, no matter who gets hurt."
My face went cold, but I told myself this was just a misunderstanding. I could fix it later.
Biting back my anger, I handed the clip back to Doria—but she fumbled it.
The thing shattered on the floor. She bit her lip hard enough to draw blood, then screamed at me:
"If Miss Montclair would rather break it than return it, why bother pretending?"
Jasper, ever the white knight, shot me a look that could freeze hell.
"Apologize to Doria right now," he said, voice like ice, "or I'm calling off the engagement."
