I zipped up the last suitcase and turned to my laptop, scrolling through rental listings. After an hour of searching, a charming house in Bridgeside District caught my eye - spacious, affordable, and available immediately. Perfect. I booked a viewing for tomorrow, crossing my fingers this would be my fresh start.
The apartment door creaked open that evening, revealing Charles' shocked face as he took in the packed luggage. "You're actually leaving?" His voice cracked with sudden realization, like he'd just woken up to how badly he'd screwed up these past nights.
I simply nodded, my calm demeanor throwing him off balance. He rushed forward, wrapping me in one of his trademark guilt-ridden hugs. "Come on, Syd, don't be like this. Jenna's practically family. If it bothers you that much, I'll cut contact once she's back on her feet."
That's when I saw it - the smeared red lipstick on his collar. My stomach lurched. I pushed him away with icy detachment. "No need. I hope you'll be happy."
He recoiled like I'd burned him. "How long are you planning to keep this act up?" That tone used to work on me - the frustrated boyfriend routine that always got me to cave. Not anymore.
His patience snapped. "So what's it gonna be? Are we getting married or not?" The question hung between us. I could've brought up Jenna's "accidental" late-night selfies she kept sending him. But what was the point? He'd just spin another excuse.
Without a word, I turned toward the bedroom. That set him off. Charles stormed after me, his voice rising. "Would you stop with the silent treatment? Jenna's going through a breakup! I can't just abandon her!" He paced like a caged animal. "I went straight to the Town Hall after comforting her. Waited two damn hours for you! I don't even get why you're mad - I've got everything set. Next Monday's perfect. We'll get the license and start picking baby names."
His words hit like a sucker punch. Hot tears spilled over before I could stop them. At two months, my baby bump hadn't shown. He didn't know about the miscarriage - didn't know his three ignored calls during my car accident had cost us our child. And now he stood there talking about names.
I met his gaze with Arctic coldness. "I terminated the pregnancy. We're through. Leave me alone."
The color drained from his face. "You... what?" His voice cracked. "You're joking." Then the switch flipped - that terrifying temper I'd learned to dread. "I told you to abort it months ago! But no, you called it a 'blessing,' talked me into marriage! Now you pull this shit? What the hell is wrong with you?"
Each word sliced deeper. All those years of bending over backward for this man - dropping hints about proposals he couldn't be bothered with, dreaming of a life he never truly wanted to give me. The irony tasted bitter.
