I finally caved and told him I'd agree—it didn't have to be some grand gesture, just a simple proposal. Charles didn't even bother responding.
Two years passed before it hit me: he had zero intention of marrying me. So, I started pushing the topic, but he always brushed me off. We're still too young. Give it another two years.
The more he resisted, the more desperate I became. I needed that ring, that security, like some kind of lifeline. I even asked if he'd marry me if I got pregnant—not that I actually thought it would happen. We were always so careful.
Then it did.
At first, Charles wanted nothing to do with the baby. But when he saw how determined I was to keep it, he finally gave in. I was over the moon. After all those years of loving him, it was finally happening.
Then the accident changed everything.
My first instinct was to protect my baby—do anything to keep it safe. But when I found out I'd lost it, I didn't feel the crushing grief I expected. Instead, relief washed over me.
I'd been so obsessed with forcing this future with Charles that I hadn't realized how suffocating it was. Now, without that weight, I could breathe again.
I still mourned—for the baby, for myself, for the mess between us. But for the first time, I knew I could walk away with no regrets.
Charles, of course, was still fuming.
"You're still mad at me, aren't you?" he snapped. "My patience is gone. Don't think you can manipulate me just because you're pregnant! You've pushed me too far. If you have this baby, I won't even acknowledge it!"
I stayed silent, and he just kept going, his words sharper, uglier.
This was his pattern. When he was angry, he'd lash out with the cruelest things he could think of. It used to destroy me. Now? Nothing. I didn't love him anymore. His words couldn't touch me.
Before he could say more, his phone rang. He glanced at the screen, and his whole demeanor shifted.
"Meet me at the Town Hall entrance next Monday morning. If you don't show up, don't come crying to me later about the baby."
With that, he stormed out.
I watched him leave, bitterness creeping into my chest. After everything, he still thought I'd keep chasing him.
That night, I barely slept. The next day, I went to Bridgeside District to check out a new place—a cozy little house the landlord had originally meant for his son's wedding. But his son had moved abroad, so now it was mine if I wanted it.
I signed the lease on the spot, paid three months upfront, and arranged for movers. By evening, I was almost settled in when my phone rang.
I answered, confused—until I heard Charles' voice.
"Baby, you smell so good."
"Ugh, Charles, stop teasing!" Jenna's breathy giggle followed.
"You like that? Wanna go up to the rooftop again?"
"Ah… Charles!"
My stomach twisted. I hung up before I could hear more.
My recovery leave was over, and it was time to get back to work. The moment I walked in, I got news—Gregory Lockwood from the Lockwood Group was coming.
My company was in the automotive industry, and Lockwood Group was a major player. I'd spent months trying to secure Gregory's investment. Now, he was finally here.
