A month ago, we sealed the deal with Lockwood Corporation—a cool quarter-billion-dollar investment. Everything seemed perfect until Gregory Lockwood showed up unannounced for a site inspection. And standing right beside him? Jenna. My stomach dropped when I realized she'd somehow weaseled her way into becoming his personal assistant.
As project lead, I kept my poker face intact, professionally guiding them through our progress. Gregory seemed pleased—thank God—but during lunch break, Jenna followed me into the pantry like a bad penny.
The second we were alone, that saccharine smirk of hers appeared. "You hung up on me last time," she cooed, voice dripping with faux concern. "Couldn't handle the truth?"
I didn't even blink. "I have standards," I said, turning to leave. "Trashy drama isn't my thing."
Her smirk vanished. She blocked the door, arms crossed, head tilted like some cheap soap opera villain. "Heard Charles dumped you," she sneered. "And that baby? Just a bastard. What's your next move, huh?"
"Get out of my way," I said, ice in my voice.
But before I could push past, she grabbed me—then yanked her own arm into a steaming cup of water.
Her scream could've shattered glass. "Why would you do this to me?!" she wailed, clutching her "injured" arm like she'd just survived a war.
The commotion brought the whole office running. Within seconds, the pantry was packed, everyone gaping at Jenna's Oscar-worthy performance—tears streaming, voice trembling.
"Ms. Harrison," she whimpered, "I swear, there's nothing between Charles and me. But if you're upset… you can pour another cup on me. I'll take it."
I stood frozen, watching her flip the script like a seasoned con artist.
Then Gregory's voice cut through the room. "Ms. Harrison, is there a problem with my staff?" He stepped in, immediately siding with Jenna.
My boss turned to me, panic in his eyes. "Sydney, care to explain?" He wasn't angry—just terrified the deal would implode.
Hand on my stomach, I kept my voice steady. "Sir, Mr. Lockwood—there are security cameras. Let's review the footage."
Relief flashed across my boss's face. Gregory arched a brow but didn't object.
Jenna, however, went rigid. "No need!" Her voice cracked. "It's fine, really—just a misunderstanding!" But her fake smile couldn't hide the panic.
No one listened. The crowd followed Gregory to surveillance, Jenna lagging behind, frantically texting. I caught a glimpse of her sending Charles a photo of her "burn" with the caption: Ran into Sydney at work. She got angry… maybe I deserved it.
The footage played in silence. Every eye in the room watched as Jenna staged the whole thing—the fake scald, the dramatic scream, the crocodile tears.
Her face drained of color.
Gregory turned to my boss, voice firm. "I've decided to establish a new subsidiary. Ms. Harrison will lead it."
The room went dead silent. Game over.
