"What's your problem?" I shot back, my voice sharp with irritation.
He threw his hands up in exasperation. "Jesus, if you actually cared about me, you'd back off. We're done here—clean break. Trust me, it's better this way."
Just as I opened my mouth to argue, a thunderous knock rattled the door.
I swung it open to find a woman in her thirties standing there—Margot Hickman. A heavyweight in Hollywood, the kind of producer who could make or break careers with a single phone call. So what the hell was she doing on my doorstep?
Before I could speak, her gaze raked over me like I was something stuck to her shoe. She let out a derisive snort. "So you're the little secret? Lila, right?"
She didn't even wait for confirmation, steamrolling ahead with that condescending drawl. "Cute face, I'll admit, but God, you reek of amateur hour. Someone like you has no business clinging to Kieran."
Margot stepped closer, her voice dropping to a venomous purr. "Let me spell it out for you, sweetheart. Walk away now, or I'll make sure you regret it. And trust me—you don't want to see how ugly this can get."
Hearing her voice, Kieran rushed out, suitcase in hand. He immediately took Margot's arm, his tone sickeningly sweet. "Babe, don't waste your breath. I'm packed—let's just go."
The way they leaned into each other made my blood boil. "Wow, Kieran," I sneered. "Didn't realize you were this hard up. Dating a washed-up cougar? Desperate much?"
Margot's face twisted. Before I could blink, her palm cracked across my cheek—hard.
"You little bitch!" she spat. "One more word out of that trashy mouth, and I'll shut it for good."
The sting left me breathless. No one—not my parents, not anyone—had ever dared to hit me. Who the hell did this woman think she was?
Kieran shoved between us, glaring at me like I was the problem. "Get it through your head, Lila. I was never going to marry you. Those years? Just killing time."
He tossed a cold glance at the check on the table. "Take the money and get lost."
Then, like some pathetic puppet, he turned to Margot, all sugary devotion. "Come on, babe. We've got that premiere after-party to prep for."
Margot smirked, pressing a kiss to his cheek before shooting me a look dripping with mock pity. "Face it, sweetie—you're small-town nobody. Kieran's heading for the A-list, and you? You'll be a footnote."
She flicked a manicured hand toward the check. "Grab your consolation prize and vanish. If I catch you near him—or hear whispers about you dragging his name through the mud—your life's over. Got it?"
Her eyes turned to ice. "I've crushed dozens of starstruck nobodies like you. Don't make me add you to the pile."
With a haughty hair toss, she strutted out arm-in-arm with Kieran, like they'd just won some trophy.
I pressed a hand to my throbbing cheek, fury boiling under my skin. Snatching the check, I shredded it into confetti and let the pieces rain to the floor.
Then I yanked out my phone and dialed Ellis, my family's fixer.
"Scrap all the behind-the-scenes support for Kieran Drake's career. Oh, and one more thing—Velvetline Entertainment, Margot's little empire, right? Invite their execs to host their precious wrap party at our estate."
A superstar? A powerhouse producer? Please. By the time I was finished, they'd be begging on their knees.
I wasn't the forgiving type. Cross me, and I'd burn your world down. And this time? I planned to enjoy every second of it.
