Tonight was my chance—my moment to serve Margot a taste of her own medicine. I wanted her to feel the sting of humiliation, to know what it was like to be crushed underfoot in front of everyone. But then there was Kieran. He complicated everything. My first love, the one I could never shake, no matter how hard I tried. Especially when I remembered how we first met.
Back then, I was in full rebellion mode—arguing with my family, rejecting everything, and finally storming out in a blaze of anger. No plan, no money, just raw emotion driving me forward. By nightfall, I was stranded—hungry, exhausted, and completely lost. A park bench or a humiliating walk home? That was my choice.
Then, just as I stood there debating my fate, two men slunk out of the shadows. Their grins were all wrong, their eyes sharp with something ugly.
"Hey, pretty thing," one sneered. "What's a girl like you doing out here alone?"
The other grabbed my arm, his grip like iron. "Come with us. We'll show you a good time."
I screamed, but the street was empty. No one heard me. No one came. They dragged me toward the darkness of the park, and for a second, I thought that was it—until Kieran appeared.
He was on a beat-up bike, but the second he saw what was happening, he didn't hesitate. He swung that bike like a weapon, slamming it into them with a force that sent them sprawling.
They scrambled up, furious, lunging at him—but Kieran wasn't some easy mark. He moved like he'd been trained, dodging their wild swings and hitting back with precision. Within seconds, they were stumbling away, bruised and humiliated.
Still shaking, I choked out my thanks. He just shrugged. "You shouldn't be out here alone. This area's not safe." His voice was firm, but not unkind. "Go home."
Before I could even catch my breath, he was walking away. I ran after him, demanding his number, refusing to let him disappear.
That night, I finally called my parents. My dad nearly lost it when he heard what happened—those two men didn't stand a chance after he sent people after them.
But Kieran? I used gratitude as an excuse to stay in his life. Bought him a new bike. Dragged him out to eat, to shop, to just be around me. Slowly, he let me in.
And that's when I learned the truth. He was a film school grad with nothing—no money, no connections, just raw talent and a mountain of frustration.
One night, after too many drinks, he broke.
"Lila, you don't get it," he whispered, voice rough with tears. "I worked my ass off just to get here. And for what? My classmates—some of them half as good as me—walked right into big contracts. A year later, they're already stars. But me? I'm nothing."
He dragged a hand over his face. "If I don't make it in another year, I'm done. I'll work a factory job, deliver food—anything but this."
Hearing him like that wrecked me. So I made a decision. I'd pull strings from the shadows. I'd make sure he got his shot.
Because Kieran? He deserved the world. And I was going to give it to him.
