The room went dead silent after my bombshell announcement. Everyone froze, faces locked in stunned disbelief like I'd just declared the sky was purple.
Margot snapped out of it first. Her face flushed beet red, eyes blazing with a toxic cocktail of rage and panic.
"You lying little bitch!" she screeched, voice cracking. "Who the hell do you think you are? The Fitzgeralds' long-lost daughter? That's rich!" She gave me a once-over with pure disgust. "Look at you! The Fitzgeralds are basically American royalty. You expect anyone to buy this pathetic act?"
She spun toward Walton like a drowning woman clutching at driftwood. "Mr. Gries, she's clearly lost her mind! This is some desperate Hail Mary to save her own skin!"
Margot was coming completely unglued in front of everyone. I almost felt bad for her. Almost.
I got it though - if I was telling the truth, her life as she knew it was over. So she did what cornered rats do: lashed out, denied reality, and tried to drag me down with her.
The crew and Kieran had turned into human statues, pale and mute. All their tough-guy bravado from earlier had evaporated, replaced by visible discomfort. Even Walton looked shaken, his mouth working like a fish out of water.
Before he could muster a response, a new commotion erupted. A group approached with the kind of presence that parts crowds. The Fitzgerald family guards led the way - and right behind them, my parents.
Walton practically tripped over himself rushing forward. "Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald, I can't apologize enough. My people completely overstepped—"
My father cut him off with a sharp hand gesture. "That can wait." His gaze landed on me, eyes turning to ice when they registered the angry red handprint on my face. Saying he was angry would be like calling a hurricane breezy. My dad had never so much as spanked me, and now some nobody had slapped me in my own home? That wasn't just an insult to me - it was a direct challenge to the Fitzgerald name.
Completely missing the nuclear meltdown happening around her, Margot sidled up with this gross, sycophantic smile.
"Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald, what an absolute honor! I'm Margot Hickman from Velvetline Entertainment. Being invited to your daughter's birthday is truly the highlight of my career." Her voice dropped into this fake-concerned whisper. "But I'm afraid there's been a terrible incident. This gutter rat snuck onto your property and tried to steal your dog! Can you believe she actually claimed to be your daughter? Don't worry though, we weren't about to—"
CRACK! My mother's palm connected with Margot's face so hard the sound echoed. Margot staggered back, clutching her cheek like she couldn't process what just happened.
I'd never seen my mom like this. The always-poised, eternally graceful Eleanor Fitzgerald was gone - replaced by this furious avenging angel. Her entire body trembled with rage as she turned to me, instantly transforming back into my mom. Gentle fingers brushed my stinging cheek, her voice thick with worry.
"Oh baby, are you okay? Does it hurt bad?"
