Even after being yelled at, the man didn't seem the least bit bothered. He took his sweet time sitting up, his eyes lazily scanning me before finally speaking.
"You must be June. Huh. A little too skinny for my taste, but whatever. You've got the looks, at least. Anyway, I've got a few days before my job starts. How about we get your parents here, meet 'em, then tie the knot soon?"
My brain short-circuited. Marry him? Since when did I enter some messed-up arranged marriage lottery?
My best friend, standing beside me, didn't hold back. She hauled off and smacked him hard across the face. "Are you out of your damn mind? Who the hell do you think you are? Like June would ever marry a creep like you!"
"The fuck was that for, you psycho?!" he roared, scrambling to his feet, ready to lunge at her. But she was faster—years of self-defense training kicked in. She snatched his wrist, twisted it sharply, and—
CRACK.
"Agh! My arm!" He crumpled to the ground, howling in pain. "I'm Darryl's brother-in-law, you bitch! You're dead—he'll make you pay for this! Let me go!"
As he fumbled for his phone, my friend kicked it out of his hand and sent it skidding across the floor. I pulled out my own phone, recorded a quick video of the groaning mess on the ground, and sent it to Darryl with a text:
[You've got 30 minutes to come get him. After that, I handle him my way.]
We called the movers to drag him out to the living room. After some persuasion, we got the full story: this guy, Ronald, was Darryl's uncle, about to start as a security guard at Darryl's company. Since he had nowhere to stay, Darryl had let him crash in my room. And, oh yeah—he'd also suggested I marry the guy.
I was livid. A few more frustrated kicks may or may not have been involved.
Darryl showed up twenty minutes later. His face darkened the second he saw his uncle sprawled on the floor.
"Have you lost all respect? How dare you treat an elder like this! Get over here and apologize—now!"
Ronald chimed in, smug despite the pain. "Damn right! You better get on your knees and beg for forgiveness. Otherwise, don't even think about stepping foot in my house again."
I almost laughed. His house? Please. "Even if every other man on Earth dropped dead, I still wouldn't set foot in your house."
I turned to Darryl, disgusted. "You seriously expect me to marry your washed-up uncle? Not happening."
Darryl sighed like he was the one being wronged. "Come on, June, don't be ungrateful. You're just some poor girl who's been clinging to me for two years. Who else would even want you? I'm doing you a favor here. Yeah, he's not as rich as me, but for someone like you? He's more than enough."
He had the nerve to look pitying. "I get it—you can't let me go. But you know I can't marry you. That's why I brought him. Marry him, and we can still be family. You'll still get to see me."
I couldn't believe my ears. Can't let him go? Where the hell did he get that idea? A week ago, I might've fallen for his crap. But now? Every shred of feeling I had for him was gone.
Enough of this circus. I yanked out the property deed and shoved it in his face.
"You thought I was lying about this house being mine? Here's proof. The real deed. Now pack your shit and get out."
Darryl snatched it, scanning it with a mix of disbelief and amusement. "You think I'm stupid?" He chuckled, shaking his head. "This is fake. Nice try, June, but you can't fool me."
