Nora’s words kept echoing in my mind even after she had left. “Beware of Don’s secretary.”
I wanted to inquire further, but it was impossible without revealing that we were discussing Gianni’s secretary.
I could only hope to encounter her again to uncover the details of what she was trying to convey.
Gianni graciously opened the car door for me, and I couldn’t help but notice that certain gestures from our past, like him holding the door for me and carrying my bag while shopping, remained unchanged.
“Thank you,” I expressed as I settled into the car, taken aback by the expressions on the faces of his bodyguards and secretary.
Sir, are you going somewhere?" she asked as he opened the door and prepared to sit down.
I was relieved when Molly mentioned that she was Don's secretary, but I couldn't help but notice her awkward demeanor.
However, I decided it wasn't my place to dwell on it. "Yes, I'll see you at the office tomorrow. I've already signed everything. Is there anything else?" Gianni asked, a hint of annoyance in his voice.
I could sense that he was still upset with me, but I couldn't quite figure out his relationship with his secretary.
"My car has a problem. I was hoping..." the secretary started to say, but Gianni interrupted her, instructing one of the bodyguards.
"Jace, check Marie's car and assist her to the office," he said. The secretary, Marie, or whatever her name was, seemed displeased and shot me a glare that could have killed.
I couldn't determine if Gianni was aware of his secretary's odd behavior.
"I've arranged for you to meet with the divorce lawyer at my office tomorrow. We'll take it from there based on his advice," Gianni informed me as he settled in beside me.
I nodded in agreement since we had already discussed it, but the thought of meeting Wesley again made me feel uneasy.
However, I couldn't shake off the memory of those men from last night and inquired, "And what about those men? Are they going to be taken to court?"
Gianni fixed me with a stern gaze that sent a shiver down my spine. "Forget about them," he replied curtly.
I felt a chill run down my spine as the words of the shoppers from last night echoed in my mind,
'They would have been declared missing.'
The implication of missing persons being either dead or kidnapped lingered in my thoughts, but I couldn't bring myself to associate such thoughts with Gianni.
The man I once knew wouldn't harm a soul. "Are you still upset about what happened?" I ventured to ask, hoping to break the tense silence between us.
My question caught his full attention, and his expression turned serious. "
Molly, if you want to survive, you have to be strong. You can't let people harm you and get away with it. That's a harsh reality of life."
His words confirmed that he was still harboring resentment towards me, prompting me to question further, "But what about forgiveness?"
He looked at me as if I had asked a perplexing question, leaving me to wonder about the changes in him.
The atmosphere in the luxurious car was heavy with unease, and neither of us spoke as Gianni remained engrossed in his phone until we arrived at the house.
Curiosity got the better of me, and I leaned in to see what he was doing, but the screen was too dark to make out anything. Perhaps it was due to his screen protector.
"Daddy!" A young boy ran towards Gianni and embraced him warmly.
As Gianni lifted the boy in his arms, his demeanor softened, and the coldness seemed to melt away.
"How are you, Roger?" Gianni asked affectionately, and I couldn't help but admire the boy in his arms.
He was very cute, with Gianni’s eyes.
“I miss you, daddy.”
“I miss you more, son,” Gianni pressed his lips to Roger’s forehead, kissing him multiple times as Roger giggled.
It was great to hear the sound of laughter after being at that boring house for two miserable years.
“What did you get me? A new game?” Roger asked.
I recalled the items I saw in the booth, exactly what Marie must have sent him.
“No. I bought you books.”
He opened a compartment in the car and brought out books before saying to the bodyguard, “Get rid of those items.”
I partly guessed they were the gifts his secretary had sent to his son.
My heart sank when I remembered the things I purchased. It seemed Gianni was raising his son differently.
“Dad, I don’t like this book. The stories are boring,” Roger frowned and tossed the book away after getting down.
Gianni picked it up, knelt to his level, and explained, “Well, life is like this book. When you start to enjoy it, that will make your life different.”
As the father and son conversed, I was completely ignored but followed from a distance.
The items taken out of the car came along with us, but one of them fell, catching Roger's eye as it was the toy I had bought for him.
"Dad, I like that one," he exclaimed.
When Gianni noticed the gift, his expression turned cold, and his gaze fixed on me, unwelcoming.
