Giovanni’s POV
It wasn't my intention to take a life in front of Roger. He may have seen horror movies, but the reality was different, especially since the man in question was his biological father.
However, he reacted more calmly than I expected. I cared for him as if he were my own son and I knew I would never harm him or let him down.
Beatrix was trying to sow seeds of discord in Roger's mind, but I knew he would only listen to advice from those he trusted.
He was an exceptional son, stronger, smarter, and more intelligent than I ever was. Regardless of what the future holds, even if I have my own children, Roger will always be my first son because love transcends everything in this world.
Despite having all my enemies defeated, the pain of not knowing what my mother looked like still lingers. The fact that someone stole her life from her is deeply disturbing.
The realization that the woman I thought was my mother for thirty years was a lie cuts deep, fueling my desperate desire to uncover her true appearance and name.
“Dad, this is the picture I saw. She has one in her room crossed," Roger swiped through the pictures, lifting the phone for me to see. The image on the screen of the phone was a beautiful woman in her mid-twenties.
I realized that the reason I never noticed something missing in my life was because I didn’t share a single resemblance to my mother. All my facial features were inherited from my father.
"Can you go and fetch it?" I asked Roger, just to be sure. I wanted to see the picture he was talking about.
Roger ran up the stairs and returned with a single medium-sized photo. With trembling hands, I took it due to the red cross print on it.
It was true. For whatever reason Hank went against the original plan, it seemed to be worth it because of how it enabled Roger to discover something I would have never discovered.
"There is something written at the back, dad," Roger said. I quickly turned the photo around, causing my hand to tremble slightly.
Behind it was written, "Delanie, today, your only son, Giovanni Dawson, would join you in your grave."
Indeed, this was my mother, and I also discovered that her name was Delanie. A beautiful woman was taken in her prime because of what? Revenge? Or just greed?
“Thanks, buddy," I ruffled Roger's hair. He smiled at me before walking over to Hank.
I transferred the picture from Beatrix's phone to mine since the hard copy was destroyed. If I have a daughter one day, I would name her Delanie if Molly agrees.
Meeting my biological mother for the first time in thirty years was only through an image, making it bittersweet, but it was better than never knowing at all.
"Who will deliver the final blow?" I asked. Roger volunteered. "Let me do it, Dad," he said. As much as it would have completed his training with this, he was too young.
"No."
"Yes," he insisted, walking over to me. "And don't worry. I won't fight for your inheritance. Just teach me how to make my own money."
A tear slid down my cheek as I pulled him into my arms. The words of that cunning woman had indirectly affected him. What is money? He was my motivation for working so hard, and even if I had biological children, everything would be shared equally among them.
"Don't listen to her. We have more money than we need. Fifty percent of everything is yours. Do you believe me?" He lifted his head and stared into my eyes with determination.
"I do, but I want to make my own money." Beatrix's words had clearly affected him, but at this moment, she knew that he had lost everything because the bond between me and Roger would never be broken.
"Sure. I will teach you how to make your own money when you are a bit older," I reassured him, noting his determination.
"How old?" he asked. I smiled at him. "It depends on how many more classes you can skip." For as long as he learns hard, I will teach him everything he needs to know to ensure he becomes the richest man alive.
“Okay. Can I do it now?” I shook my head as Hank took the knife from Roger.
“Gio, let me do it.”
Carrying Roger, as he struggled for me to let him, I walked away from Beatrix.
As much as I was pained and wanted to give her the most painful death, I didn’t want my son to turn out as a complete beast, but I could still hear Beatrix crying.
“Hank, please don’t.”
Covering Roger’s eyes, I turned around to see a knife plunged into Beatrix’s heart as Roger forcefully moved my hand.
Hank was still holding his knife, meaning Roger’s knife had delivered the final blow, even as I held him firmly in my arms to prevent him.
I could feel the atmosphere tense and I knew it was because of what Roger had just done.
The swiftness, even when he was in an uncomfortable position, made it too scary. The fact remained that Beatrix was dead, but Roger was learning too fast, and I was beginning to be afraid of him.
What if the weapon I had developed turned to kill me one day?
“Dad, I love you,” he said to me. I cursed internally for thinking he might turn against me one day. Roger would never. I loved him like my own son, and he loved me like a father. Kissing him on the forehead, I said seriously.
“I love you, son. You have no idea.”
Octavia had tears in her eyes as she addressed Molly. “Molly, take good care of your son,” she said, looking afraid of Roger, but I still had a score to settle with Hank.
“Why did you change the plan without informing me first?” I asked, imagining all the things that could have gone wrong, but I appreciated his honesty.
“Like I said, I didn’t trust Octavia when you did, so I was confidential with such a delicate twist, but I’m sorry.”
As much as I hated to admit it, the truth was clear. “Well, you did a good job, and I’ll double your pay.”
“Well, I was thinking of not taking any money, one condition,” he smirked, his gaze settled on Octavia.
“What is that?” I asked, wondering if it wasn’t what I was thinking. Was I missing something?
