Nora’s POV
Gio, were they responsible for the threatening note?" Hank inquired. Gio nodded. "Yes, they targeted Molly and Roger. When they couldn't reach her due to the tight security, they exploited her health condition."
He smiled bitterly and continued, "During our first antenatal visit after our honeymoon, Molly mentioned seeing this boy, but I dismissed it as a hallucination. They have been monitoring her for a long time without success."
Now everything made sense, but why did they use Wade? "What about the boy? Why send him?" I asked, and Gio looked saddened.
"They manipulated him, poisoning his mind. Before I killed Wesley's father for murdering his wife, he hinted that there were more threats coming. I suspect his other two children," he explained.
If this young boy could have murderous intentions towards Roger, then his siblings could be even more dangerous. They needed to be located.
Gio gazed at Wade with concern evident in his eyes and voice. "I assure you, we will protect you. I can arrange private assistance for you, but if you keep secrets, I won't be able to help you any longer."
Tears welled up in the boy's eyes, evoking pity. "They said you would kill me if I told you," Wade confessed.
Gio and Hank shook their heads. "We only deal with those who deserve it," Hank reassured, with Gio adding, "If your grandparents hadn't coerced you into attacking my family, I wouldn't have had to take action against them."
Wade nodded, gradually relaxing, and then disclosed, "Aunt Bertha and Uncle Rudolph are hiding in the next van."
Hank moved to approach the van when Wade cautioned, "They are armed." Gio turned to me and said, “Go be with Molly. We’ll be there soon.” I didn’t want to witness it anymore, so I pleaded with Roger, “Let’s go,” but he refused.
“No. I have to make sure justice is served for mom.”
The boy's profound bravery, charisma, strength, and intelligence made it hard not to fall in love with him.
Maybe one day, I might be as tough as Roger, but now was not the time. As I entered Molly’s ward, I noticed there were bodyguards this time, but none of them restricted me.
“Molly, I’m glad you are okay. Hank and Gio battled a gang, but that Roger,” I was saying when Molly interrupted worriedly, “What happened to Roger?”
The love between them was formidable, and after I explained everything, she sighed with relief.
“I’m glad they are okay.”
We chatted about random stuff, and I told her about my business before the two and a half men arrived about two hours later with their clothes changed.
“Mom, how is your injury?" Roger climbed onto Molly's bed and hugged her, with Gio joining in before pulling away to check her injured hand, a look of remorse on his face.
"I'm so sorry, but trust me, they are all gone. No one will disturb you ever again."
"You got them?" I asked. Roger explained, "They weren't even tough. Only Wade is alive, but Dad called the child protection service, and they took care of him. He made special arrangements, though."
Wade had been through a lot and indeed needed help. "That's wonderful news, Molly," I said with a smile. Gio suddenly remembered something and apologized, "The food."
Everyone laughed as he called Jace to bring the food. A few days later, Molly was discharged, and I came to escort her home. Despite everything, she was as happy as ever, but Don refused to let her out of his sight because of the pregnancy.
I heard that he worked a lot from home just to spend most of his time with Molly.
She was three months pregnant, and with Roger being five already, I knew he would make a wonderful big brother.
That night, Hank drove me home, and after he left, I showered and was about to go to bed when I heard a knock on the door. It was Carter.
“Can I come in?" he asked before I even opened the door. I wondered how he knew I was checking the peephole, and something felt off.
"Must you? What do you want?" I inquired. He appeared angry but then suddenly smiled. "Coffee."
Normally, he would come for coffee, but after the incident in the elevator and Hank's reluctance to discuss him, I was wary. So, I texted Hank.
‘Carter is at my door. You never told me how you two are connected.’
My phone rang immediately, and just as I reached to answer, the door swung open, and Carter knocked my hand, causing the phone to fall and the screen to shatter.
"What the heck, how did you open the door?" The lock was a smart one that only I could unlock.
A sinister smile spread across his face as he grabbed my hair. "Didn't your boyfriend tell you who I am?"
"Carter, what is going on?" He had always been reserved, and now he was acting strangely.
"Thank you for all the coffee, but I'm sorry, I can't ignore an order." He pushed me against the sofa, and I tumbled over. "What do you mean?"
His blonde hair was tousled, and his gaze was intense. As he approached me, I sensed his intentions were malicious, so I rolled off the sofa onto the floor, grabbed a vase, and hurled it at him.
He deflected the vase before it reached him. "Come on, I don't want to make a mess, and there's nowhere to run. We can do this the easy way or the hard way."
The tone of his voice alarmed me; I sensed something was amiss. "Carter, what's gotten into you?"
"Nothing," he replied, advancing towards me. I instinctively backed away until I reached the kitchen. Grabbing a knife, I concealed it behind me, trembling as he entered.
Having picked up a few tricks during my time at Gio's mansion with Hank and Roger, I wasn't sure if any of that knowledge would be of use now. "You know I always had a soft spot for you but now, I need the money."
"You're a jerk," I shouted, noticing his smile didn't reach his eyes. "I genuinely cared for you until Hank came into the picture. Do you even know him?"
My teeth clenched as he drew closer, leaving me with no escape as my back pressed against the counter. He seized me by the throat, and I retaliated by stabbing his hand with the knife.
He yanked it out and licked the blade, a repulsive sight. Seizing the opportunity, I tried to flee, but he forcefully threw me to the ground.
Before I could react, he pinned my legs together and trapped them between his knees, while his bloodied hands held mine above my head.
"Carter, I treated you well. I never betrayed you, so why are you doing this?" My voice quivered with each word, and a flicker of guilt crossed his eyes before vanishing.
"I'm sorry, but I can't refuse the order," he said, raising the knife to strike me when his hand was halted mid-air.
"Hank," I whispered, surprised by his sudden appearance without making a sound, but relief flooded over me at the sight of him.
