Giovanni’s POV
I didn’t expect Molly to clean Roger’s shoes, but she did. It was something I always did for Roger, but the way he asked Molly to do it was wrong.
I expected her to refuse, but she explained her side of the story, making it seem like nothing.
I don’t want her to be a pushover like she always allowed herself to be. Instead, I want her to become strong, confident, and resilient. That would be the only way for her to stand up to those who bullied her.
Training her to fit that description was not difficult for me, but I didn’t want to do that for a married woman.
Call me selfish, but that is what it is. I hurt her in the past, and I’m ready to make amends, but her ex-husband is now happy with her sister.
All I wanted was to declare them missing, but Molly was too kind. My declaring the two men who almost took advantage of her missing is still a matter I haven’t been able to explain to her.
I don’t know how she will take their death, so I had to toughen her to face my world and, if possible, give her back her music career.
My only fear was my son, Roger. He still never liked anyone close to him, and that was a big problem for me.
Hoping that he and Molly would get along, I was woken by her screams. Accustomed to sleeping in my boxers, which were more comfortable than any pajamas, I didn’t have time to put on any clothes before rushing to her room.
I felt pained to see her helpless and afraid, but who told her to wear that lingerie anyway? Molly was still the same as before, tempting and hot, but the constant reminder of the gap between us was enough to dissolve any hope of anything happening between us.
Then I decided to confront Roger and have him stop his bratty behavior, but that question made me lose my words.
"What about mom?" He asked desperately, and I knew some of his behaviors were due to missing his mother, but some things were better left unsaid.
"I told you never to talk about her."
He seemed remorseful but countered it with something more serious. "Let Molly go."
I smiled bitterly and thought to explain it to him. Unless Molly was a mean person, then I would understand his desire for her to leave, but she had a softness I hated so much.
Meeting again, I was glad when she slapped me, but even if she had done worse, I would have gladly accepted it.
"I wouldn’t be alive today if it weren’t for Molly. She saved my life and has every right to be here," I explained, disappointed that he was still not remorseful, so I decided to tighten things a little.
"I’ve asked the maids to clean her room, so you just lost those spiders. I’m sending them to animal control. If you send the rabbit or the parrot another time, they will also be gone."
Roger loved pets, a passion he inherited from me. During my lonely moments, my pets were my closest companions. However, when I couldn't devote enough time to them, I ensured they were well cared for elsewhere.
Roger would often read or play with his pets when he had the opportunity, which I found more fulfilling than playing games.
Through his interactions with pets, he learned to be both fearless and kind. The only difference was that his pets appreciated his kindness more than humans did.
"I want my spiders back. You can't do that," he exclaimed angrily. This outburst prompted me to consider taking things to the next level.
There were certain habits he needed to develop. "That will only happen under one condition," I stated firmly, noticing a shadow under the door, indicating someone was eavesdropping on our conversation.
I paused, then approached the door cautiously, opening it abruptly to find Molly looking like a guilty teenager caught in the act.
The sight was somewhat amusing, but I rarely smiled except when I was with Roger.
Didn't anyone tell you that eavesdropping is rude?" I asked her, watching her face redden with embarrassment as she tried to come up with an excuse.
"I'm sorry. I came to prepare him for school but overheard your conversation and waited here."
Not wanting to embarrass her, I replied, "Go ahead and get him ready."
She went inside, and as I stepped out the door, I overheard Roger asking, "Dad, what do I need to do to get my spiders back?"
He sounded frustrated, and I almost gave in, but I knew he needed to learn how to manage his emotions.
Turning back around, I spoke firmly, "You need to apologize to Molly, and it needs to be sincere."
I saw his expression change instantly, and I regretted teaching him so much at such a young age. What amazed me was his calculated response.
