Nora, a manager at one of Don’s clubs, was among those whose reports passed through my office for scrutiny.
She was appointed directly by Don himself, for reasons he never disclosed to me, as she did not possess the required qualifications.
However, her work was flawless, justifying Don’s decision to appoint her.
I anticipated a positive or VIP response from her, but instead, she was rude. ‘Sorry, I'll be too busy to chat,’ she replied dismissively.
I clenched the phone tightly in my hand. How dare she refuse my request? I vowed to make her pay or find a more suitable replacement for her.
I contemplated setting her up with incriminating evidence to potentially have her fired or declared missing by Don.
As I arrived at the office, I discovered that my boss had already left with his divorce lawyer, suspecting they were in Don’s office, so I eavesdropped to gather more information.
"Charlie, meet Molly. The woman I told you about," Don's voice echoed through the door, confirming the manager's claim that Molly was experiencing marital issues.
It was true. It was her, and Don was aware of it.
"She’s a stunner," Charlie remarked, but Don's tone suddenly shifted, indicating his displeasure about something I couldn't discern.
“Is that so? Get out," I heard Don yell, surprised by his outburst. Why was he upset because the lawyer complimented Molly?
"Don, what did I do wrong? It's just out of courtesy that I give my compliment," the divorce lawyer defended himself, but there was a chance he had eyes on Molly.
An idea popped into my mind. This divorce lawyer was interested in Molly, so if I could get Don out of there, then he and Molly could have a good chat or something interesting going on, right?
As a desperate woman, anyone should be able to win her over.
"Alright, I need you to review the clauses in the divorce agreement and advise on it," Don said, I heard Charlie asking.
"Right now?"
Don’s temper this morning was terrible. “Yes, I already sent you a copy. Have you not read it?" His voice was rising again, indicating his growing frustration.
He was typically cold, but outbursts like this were uncommon, clearly triggered by that woman, Molly.
"I have, and..." Charlie was saying when I seized the opportunity and knocked on the door.
"Come in," I heard Don say.
"Sir, should I dismiss them?" I inquired, aware that he wouldn't want me to. Those bosses bring us valuable business.
He looked apologetically at Molly before responding to me, "Give me a few minutes. I will be there."
I winked at Charlie and turned to leave for the conference room, hearing Don say, "I will be back, but I need you to explain the details to her. She has the right to decide on what she wants to do after that."
Upon reaching the conference room, things were not any better.
Don rushed through the meeting, but what amazed me was how he still managed to secure the best deal.
Without waiting to see the bosses off, he quickly headed back to the office. The entire meeting lasted around twenty minutes, making it the shortest meeting we had ever had with such high-ranking bosses.
I hurried through the remaining procedures to catch a glimpse of their discussion before seeing off our guests and returning to my office.
I noticed a redness on Charlie's face as he rushed past me, headed for the elevator.
Torn between eavesdropping and following him. I opted for the latter, catching up to him and asking, "What happened?"
He looked at me with red, swollen eyes, his disheveled suit and blood dripping from his hair.
"Molly saved my life," he said before rushing into the elevator.
Back in the office, I leaned against the door. Don seemed upset as he questioned Molly.
What's holding you back from signing it? Do you still want him?" I couldn't help but notice his jealousy, but why? What made Molly so special, and how did he even know her?
"Never," Molly's response was fearless. Did she even realize who she was dealing with?
No one ever denied Don anything, yet she seemed to defy him effortlessly. "But I want him to suffer," she added, displeasing Don.
"Then sign it, or I won't help you," he said as the door opened, his cold gaze fixed on me. Damn it. I'm in trouble.
