Wesley’s POV
The spy I hired to gather information about Giovanni surprised me with his question.
“Are you expecting me to answer this question after my deposit?” I asked him on the phone, he abruptly ended the call.
As I looked at the unconscious bodyguards on the floor, I considered asking for his help to dispose off them when I noticed a movement.
I rushed to his side and helped him up. “You’re alive?”
He stumbled slightly, and I steadied him. “Why didn’t you inform us that it was Don we were up against? I wouldn’t have come,” he expressed, disheartened.
I contemplated hiring someone more capable to confront Giovanni or forming alliances with his business rivals.
“If you were alive, why were you unconscious for so long?”
To my surprise, he began to rouse his companions. “We had to feign death to save our lives, if you catch my drift. Don wouldn’t hesitate to send you to your grave,” he cautioned.
His comrades stood up, eyeing me warily. One of them spoke up, “If you won’t pay the remainder, that’s fine, but don’t involve us in matters concerning Don Gio again.”
Before I could respond, they hastily exited the house, leaving my mother visibly upset with me.
“Are you waiting for her to die?" she questioned, her gaze fixed on Kiara. I felt somewhat angry with her.
"She shouldn't have approached him, but Dad is at the hospital, so you can take her to the car," I said, about to leave the room when she spoke up.
"I can't carry her alone."
"Radley, Bertha, help her. I can't use one of my arms, and you both know that," I instructed. As they carried Kiara to the car, I told Bertha and Radley, "You both should clean the house."
However, Mom was upset with me. "Wesley, you need to hire a maid. Your brother and sister can't clean. Have you forgotten we had maids at our previous house?"
They did have maids, but when I married Molly, my mom insisted that she take on all the tasks that none of my siblings were willing to do, even moving from their house to ours.
I accepted it to keep an eye on Molly, despite feeling irritated. This time, I was not siding with my siblings.
"If Molly can do it, so can you both. I'm not paying for a professional cleaning service," I said to my mom, Bertha and Radley, who reluctantly stayed back to clean. I didn't care about their displeasure.
At the hospital, Kiara was taken to the emergency unit, and the doctor delivered heartbreaking news about dad. "Your father is in a coma."
"What?" I couldn't believe it. "What did Giovanni do to him?" I muttered, and my mother quickly responded,
"He treated your father like an animal, and you did nothing. I'm so disappointed."
I was deeply disappointed in myself. Throughout my life, I had always enjoyed the respect and devotion of those around me, but Giovanni managed to belittle me in just twenty-four hours.
"Don't worry. He will pay for everything he did to us," I reassured my mother before turning to the doctor.
"Doc, is there anything you can do for him?" I inquired.
He shook his head. "I'm sorry. We just have to wait until he wakes up, and I can't say exactly when that will be."
The news was heartbreaking, having my father in the hospital while the one responsible for putting him there walked freely. Giovanni seemed to be no ordinary individual.
Kiara was revived, looking as pale as a ghost. I couldn't pretend around her and asked directly.
"What were you trying to do? Why did you attempt to touch him?" I asked earnestly, and she stared at me like a lost soul.
"I was trying to retrieve the jewelry box, but he wouldn't even listen to me," she sobbed, and I felt a pang of guilt.
"I'm sorry. You left me before, so I thought..."
"That I would leave you?" She interjected with a disappointed look. "Wesley, I may not be perfect, but I won't betray you like that again."
I really hoped she was telling me the truth because something in me said she wasn’t.
Kiara wasn’t faithful, and if not for our son, I wouldn’t have taken her back into my life. Even as I tried to make it work, losing Molly made me realize my biggest mistake.
Getting her away from Giovanni was almost impossible, unless I found someone more powerful than him, and a name came to mind.
However, when I tried to reach the spy I had sent to keep an eye on Giovanni, for the umpteenth time, his number could not be reached.
I couldn’t help but remember those men I sent after Molly. Was it possible that Giovanni was involved in their disappearance? What about this spy?
As I weighed my options, my phone began to ring. It was Molly, and I wondered what else she wanted from me.
